Comparative StudyAntimicrobial use and indication-based prescribing among general practitioners in Eastern Croatia: comparison with data from the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption project.
To investigate antibiotic consumption in a sample of physicians from Osijek-Baranja county in Eastern Croatia and to determine the volume of prescribed antimicrobials and assess the appropriateness of prescribing practices. ⋯ Prescription of medicines in Osijek-Baranja county was characterized by high consumption of broad-spectrum penicillins, combined penicillins, combined sulfonamides and long-acting macrolides (azithromycin), together with disproportionately low use of doxycycline and erythromycin. The use of combined sulfonamides and azithromycin in this part of Croatia was among the highest in Europe. Great differences between prescribers in regard to indication-based prescribing have been found, and future studies should examine the factors behind these heterogeneous practices.

Prognostic value of venoarterial carbon dioxide gradient in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.
To investigate the changes in the venoarterial carbon-dioxide gradient (V-a Pco(2)) and its prognostic value for survival of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. ⋯ V-a Pco(2) was a significant predictor of fatal outcome only in the non-ventilated group of patients. Ventilated patients are more likely to be admitted with a less favorable clinical status, and other variables seem to have a more important role in their outcome.

Comparative StudyGenetic variation at 15 polymorphic, autosomal, short tandem repeat loci of two Hungarian populations in Transylvania, Romania.
To determine allele distribution and genetic parameters for two populations living in the Romanian region of Transylvania: Hungarians from Cluj and Szeklers from Covasna county, and to compare the results between the two populations and with other Hungarian and Romanian populations. ⋯ Hungarians from Cluj show greater genetic heterogeneity than Szeklers from Covasna. The loci tested are suitable for studying micro-differentiation between these two populations, and between these populations and other populations in Hungary and Romania.

Disclosure of new health problems and intervention planning using a geriatric assessment in a primary care setting.
To determine the prevalence of health problems uncovered by a Standardized Assessment for Elderly Patients in a Primary Care Setting (STEP), to explore how often STEP uncovered conditions new to general practitioners (GP) and ascertain how often STEP results led GPs to plan further interventions. ⋯ Using a geriatric assessment in primary care discloses relevant heath problems and treatment needs that GPs may otherwise overlook.
