Background and Objectives: Lean body mass loss after bariatric surgery (BS) is remarkable, despite an effective long-term mass reduction and significant declines in comorbidities. A person's functional capacity is adversely affected when their skeletal muscle strength declines by up to 30%. This study aimed to assess the isokinetic trunk muscle strength and fatigue rate in individuals after BS. ⋯ In terms of the EMG fatigue rate, the RMS slope increased significantly more than that of the control group, while the MF slope decreased (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The current study found that, in comparison to the healthy subjects, the BS group showed reduced levels of fatigue and isokinetic strength in the trunk muscles. Based on these results, it is recommended that individuals who underwent BS take part in tailored rehabilitation programs to avoid potential musculoskeletal issues in the future.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an important independent risk factor for stroke. Current guidelines handle AF as a binary entity with risk driven by the presence of clinical risk factors, which guides the decision to treat with an oral anticoagulant. Recent studies in the literature suggest a dose-response relationship between AF burden and stroke risk, in both clinical AF and subclinical atrial fibrillation (SCAF), which differs from current guidance to disregard burden and utilize clinical risk scores alone. ⋯ This opens the possibility of incorporating burden into risk profiles, which has already shown promise. Long-term rhythm monitoring is needed to elucidate SCAF in patients with stroke. Recent data from randomized trials are controversial regarding whether there is an independent risk from AF episodes with a duration of less than 24 h, including the duration of SCAF greater than six minutes but less than 24 h.

Background and objectives: Dengue is one of the most common epidemic infections around the world. Dengue infections in older adults are related to an atypical presentation and a high mortality. Frailty is associated with poor recovery from hospitalization due to infection. ⋯ Conclusions: Our preliminary data suggest that there is indeed an increase in frailty in older adults due to dengue. Post-dengue frailty and functional decline might be profound and persistent. Acute geriatric care intervention rehabilitation for frailty after dengue may benefit this population.

Background and Objectives: This study aims to identify the precise anatomical location and therapeutic mechanisms of the KI1 acupoint (Yongquan) in relation to foot muscles and nerves, known for treating neurological disorders and pain. Materials and Methods: Dissection of six cadavers at Chungnam National University College of Medicine examined KI1's relation to the foot's four-layer structure. Results: The KI1 acupoint was located in the superficial and deep layers of the plantar foot, adjacent to significant nerves like the medial and lateral plantar nerves. ⋯ KI1 acupuncture was found to stimulate the muscle spindles and nerve fibers essential for balance and bipedal locomotion. This stimulation may enhance sensory feedback, potentially improving cognitive functions and balance control. Conclusions: This anatomical insight into KI1 acupuncture underpins its potential in neurological therapies and pain management.

Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of various acute disorders including ischemia/reperfusion injury, ultraviolet/radiation burn, as well as chronic disorders such as dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the precise mechanism involved remains to be clarified. We formerly identified a novel apoptosis-inducing humoral protein, in a hypoxia/reoxygenation-conditioned medium of cardiac myocytes, which proved to be 69th tyrosine-sulfated eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A). ⋯ The body weight in anti-ORAIP mAb-treated group was significantly heavier than that in a mouse IgG-treated control group on day 8 of DSS-treatment ((85.21 ± 1.03%) vs. (77.38 ± 2.07%); (mean ± SE0, n = 5 each, p < 0.01, t-test). In vivo anti-ORAIP mAb-treatment also significantly suppressed the shortening of colon length as well as Disease Activity Index (DAI) score ((5.00 ± 0.44) vs. (8.20 ± 0.37); (mean ± SE), n = 5 each, p < 0.001, t-test) by suppressing inflammation of the rectal tissue and apoptosis of intestinal mucosal cells. These data reveal the pivotal role of ORAIP in DSS-induced oxidative stress involved in an animal model of UC.
