Background and Objectives: Selenium deficiency represents a risk factor for the occurrence of severe diseases, such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Recently, selenoprotein-p1 (SEPP1), a selenium transporter, mainly released by the liver, has emerged as a promising plasmatic biomarker of AKI as a consequence of cardio-surgery operations. The aim of the present study was to investigate, on an in vitro model of hypoxia induced in renal tubular cells, HK-2, the effects of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and to evaluate the expression of SEPP1 as a marker of injury. ⋯ Moreover, by Western blot an increase in SEPP1 expression was observed after hypoxic injury as after adding sodium selenite. Conclusions: Our preliminary results shed light on the possible role of selenium supplementation as a means to prevent oxidative damage and to increase SEPP1 after acute kidney injury. In our in vitro model, SEPP1 emerges as a promising biomarker of kidney injury, although further studies in vivo are necessary to validate our findings.

Background and Objectives: The discharge destination of patients with advanced cancer correlates with their quality of life. Patients with bone metastases often undergo lifestyle changes owing to pain and activity limitations. However, there are few reports on factors related to the discharge destination of patients with bone metastases. ⋯ Conclusions: Factors associated with discharge destination were identified. The walking ability required for discharge to home was FAC 1.5, meaning that the patient needed one person to assist in preventing falls when walking on level ground. A cut-off value for FAC on admission for predicting outcomes was identified, suggesting the importance of gait ability assessment on admission.

Background and Objectives: Determinants of long-term outcomes after surgery for native mitral valve endocarditis have not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess anatomical, disease, and surgical risk factors for long-term mortality and need of reintervention, in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery for active endocarditis. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent surgery for active native mitral valve endocarditis at three academic centres, between 2000 and 2022, were analysed. ⋯ The 5- and 10-year freedom from reoperation was 94.7% and 91.8%, respectively. Conclusions: Active mitral valve endocarditis remains a life-threatening disease with impaired survival. While lesion characteristics influenced surgical decision-making and intraoperative management, their impact on long-term survival and freedom from reintervention appears to be moderated by other factors such as infecting pathogens and patient comorbidities.

Background and Objectives: Genitourinary syndrome, previously defined as vulvovaginal atrophy, manifests with signs and symptoms deriving from estrogen diminution in the female genitourinary tract. Stable ozonides are derivatives of artemisinin found to be stable against strong basic and acidic conditions. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant diminishing the output of reactive oxygen species in the oxidation of fats and the emanation of free radicals, reducing cellular injury and aging. ⋯ Dryness was the most frequent pre-treatment symptom and decreased from 85.5% to 53.8% (p-value < 0.0001) (mean: 2.21 vs. 0.90; p-value < 0.0001). Conclusions: Ozoile was effective in reducing most gynecologic symptoms related to genitourinary syndrome. However, further studies are needed to compare its effect with other standards of care.

Palsy of Both the Tibial Nerve and Common Peroneal Nerve Caused by a Ganglion Cyst in the Popliteal Area.
A ganglion cyst is a benign mass consisting of high-viscosity mucinous fluid. It can originate from the sheath of a tendon, peripheral nerve, or joint capsule. Compressive neuropathy caused by a ganglion cyst is rarely reported, with the majority of documented cases involving peroneal nerve palsy. ⋯ In the operative field, several cysts were discovered, originating at the site where the sciatic nerve splits into peroneal and tibial nerves. After successful surgical decompression and a series of rehabilitation procedures, the patient's neurological symptoms improved. There was no recurrence.
