Background and Objectives: Acute heart failure (AHF) is a life-threatening condition frequently encountered in the emergency department (ED). Identifying reliable prognostic indicators for in-hospital mortality is crucial for risk stratification and the appropriate management of AHF patients. This study aimed to assess the most effective method for predicting in-hospital mortality among various physiological parameters in patients with AHF presenting to the ED. ⋯ A RAM index > 18.6 demonstrated a 7.36-fold higher risk of in-hospital mortality with a sensitivity of 0.80, specificity of 0.68, and negative predictive value of 0.97. Conclusions: The RAM index is an effective tool to predict mortality in AHF patients presenting to the ED. Its superior performance compared to traditional SI-based parameters suggests that the RAM index can aid in risk stratification and the early identification of high-risk patients, facilitating timely and aggressive treatment strategies.

Relationship between Marriage and Prediabetes among Healthcare Workers: Mediating Effect of Triglycerides.
Background and Objectives: In the literature, relationships between being married and having prediabetes or diabetes are inconsistent. We aimed to investigate whether marriage is a protective or risk factor for prediabetes and to uncover new insights into its impact on prediabetes. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, questionnaires were distributed by email to 1039 staff members who participated in an employee health check from a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taiwan. ⋯ Conclusions: TGs play a significant role in the association between marriage and prediabetes among the group aged 20-37 years. Therefore, dietary habits, especially those of young adult couples should be considered. Our findings connect marital status to prediabetes, facilitating advances in diabetes prevention.

Background: The most problematic complication of external fixation is infection at the pin insertion site. Technology that improves the adhesion of the external fixation pin to the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and bone may prevent infection at the pin site. The purpose of this study is to formulate a calcium phosphate-fibroblast growth factor (Cp-FGF) coating on a stainless-steel external fixation pin and to verify its effectiveness in reducing infection at the pin site and its possible influence on bone fixation in animal experiments. ⋯ Since neither the FGF+ group nor the FGF group showed anti-infective effects, the biological activity of FGF is not the only determining factor. We compared SEM, XRD, coating detaching test, sustained release test, and bioassay to examine physicochemical properties among the coatings but found no sufficient differences. Conclusions: It is suggested that improving the tissue adhesion to and/or biocompatibility of pins is also important to improve the in vivo performance of Cp-FGF-coated external fixation pins.

Effects of Rhythm Step Training on Foot and Lower Limb Balance in Children and Adolescents with Flat Feet: A Radiographic Analysis.
Background and Objectives: Owing to the recent reports regarding the efficacy of rhythm step training (RST) in lower limb muscle development and motor skill enhancement, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of RST on foot and lower limb balance in children and adolescents diagnosed with flat feet using radiographic analysis. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 children and adolescents diagnosed with flat feet from a hospital in Seoul were randomly assigned to the general flat feet training (GFFT) (n = 80) or RST (n = 80) group. Patients in both groups exercised for 50 min once a week for 12 weeks. ⋯ Conclusions: RST significantly enhances foot and lower limb balance in children and adolescents with flat feet, suggesting its potential use as an effective intervention for this population. The study did not specifically analyze the effects of various components of rhythm training, such as music, exercise intensity, and frequency, on the outcomes. Further research is needed to determine how each of these elements individually influences the results.

Background and Objectives: Migraine is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with complex pathophysiological mechanisms involving oxidative and nitrosative stress. Recent research suggests that Indole-3-Propionic Acid (IPA) may have a neuroprotective role in reducing nitrosative stress. This study aims to elucidate the roles of IPA and nitrosative stress biomarkers in migraine patients, focusing on their potential as therapeutic targets. ⋯ Conclusions: The study highlights the significant involvement of IPA and nitrosative stress in migraine pathophysiology. Elevated IPA levels, particularly in EM patients, suggest its potential neuroprotective role. These findings underscore the importance of targeting oxidative and nitrosative stress pathways in developing effective migraine therapies.
