Background and Objectives: Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic drug that is frequently used with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Cisplatin-induced gonadotoxicity leads to a depletion of the ovarian reserve, causing premature ovarian insufficiency. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hyperthermia on cisplatin-induced ovarian toxicity and to determine whether sevoflurane or desflurane could be a more appropriate choice of anesthetic for reducing ovarian toxicity in HIPEC procedures. ⋯ Conclusions: The application of cisplatin with the intraoperative HIPEC method caused ovarian damage. According to our results, sevoflurane anesthesia could be a better option in mitigating cell death I the n ovarian reserve (follicle count) and apoptosis in the HIPEC procedures. We think that our findings should be supported by large series of clinical and experimental studies.

Background and Objectives: Typically, the vertebral arteries (VAs) enter the posterior fossa through dural rings and further unite, forming the basilar artery. The posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) is usually a branch of the V4 segment of the VA (intradural origin). It may also leave the V3 suboccipital segment of the VA (extradural origin). ⋯ Four of the seventy-eight PICAs opposite to an absent one, three intradural and one transdural, were true bihemispheric PICAs. Conclusions: The PICAs with extradural or transdural origins are facultative contents of the dural ring and are at risk during neurosurgical approaches in the foramen magnum. Rare bihemispheric PICAs could originate either intradurally or within the dural ring.

Background and Objectives: Infections are the most common and potentially life-threatening complications of the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The aim of this study was to determine epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological characteristics of infections in pediatric patients with ALL. Materials and Methods: Twenty-three children (16 males and 7 females, with a mean age of 5.9 years (range of 1.3 to 12.2 years)) with ALL, treated at the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Clinical Genetics, Department of Pediatrics, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, Croatia, from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2020, were included in the study. ⋯ No infection-related mortality was reported. Conclusions: ALL patients have frequent IEs. Close monitoring, the identification of risk factors, the rapid empirical use of antibiotics in febrile neutropenia, and the timely modification of antimicrobial therapy play key roles in reducing infection-related morbidity and mortality in children with ALL.

Background and Objectives: Transverse maxillary deficiency is an important maxillary anomaly that is very common in society and remains current in orthodontics. The maxillary expansion has been used in treatment for a long time. While maxillary expansion can be performed with rapid maxillary expansion in young adults, it is performed with surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) in individuals who have reached skeletal maturity. ⋯ Results: Our results showed that when the pterygomaxillary plates were separated, fewer stresses were observed on the bone and teeth. Although hybrid-supported appliances created less stress on the teeth than tooth-supported appliances and no difference was found between bone-supported appliances, it was found that hybrid-supported appliances created less stress on the bone than the other appliances. Conclusions: The separation of the pterygomaxillary junction in the SARME operation and the use of a bone-supported or hybrid-supported appliance would place less stress on the bone and teeth.

Background and Objective: Cerebral palsy (CP) significantly impacts quality of life globally. Hip dysplasia (HD) is a common musculoskeletal issue in CP patients. This study investigates the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of HD on CP patients using a large national database. ⋯ Age was significantly associated with HD, with each additional year increasing the odds (OR = 1.03, 95% CI [1.026, 1.034], p < 0.0001). Individuals in the high 51st-75th income quartile had a 17% increase in the odds of HD (OR = 1.17, 95% CI [1.09, 1.25], p < 0.0001) compared to the low 1st-25th income quartile. Conclusions: This study reinforces the strong association between CP and HD, highlighting the need for further research and prospective studies to validate these findings.
