Effect of intraarticular hyaluronan injection in experimental canine osteoarthritis.
To determine if intraarticular injections of hyaluronan (HA) protect against the early stages of joint damage in a canine model of osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ In this canine model of OA, the series of intraarticular injections of HA did not alter development of osteophytosis or fibrillation. However, the PG concentration of cartilage in the OA knee was significantly reduced by this treatment, suggesting that HA therapy might adversely affect the biomechanical properties of the cartilage.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialOral iloprost treatment in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon secondary to systemic sclerosis: a multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind study.
To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of an oral preparation of iloprost, a prostacyclin analog, in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) secondary to systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). ⋯ Oral iloprost at a dosage of 50 microg twice daily is no better than placebo for management of RP secondary to scleroderma, either during 6 weeks of treatment or during 6 weeks of posttreatment followup.

Oncostatin M stimulates monocyte chemoattractant protein-1- and interleukin-1-induced matrix metalloproteinase-1 production by human synovial fibroblasts in vitro.
To measure levels of oncostatin M (OSM) in the synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and to examine the activities of human OSM in the regulation of human synovial fibroblast (HSF) production of chemokines and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-3) in vitro. ⋯ These results suggest that OSM has potentially important functions in the modulation of chemokine and metalloproteinase production by synovial cells of the joint.

Case ReportsMediastinal mass and hilar adenopathy: rare thoracic manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis.
To assess the frequency and characteristics of hilar and mediastinal involvement in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). ⋯ In the past, hilar adenopathy and/or mediastinal mass have been considered unlikely features of WG, and their presence has prompted consideration of an alternative diagnosis. Although this caution remains valuable, the present retrospective review of data from 2 large WG registries illustrates that such findings may rarely be a part of the spectrum of WG chest disease. Because these findings are uncommon, they necessitate consideration of a primary or concurrent infection or malignancy in the diagnostic evaluation.
