In December 2019, COVID-19 outbroke in Wuhan, then sweeping the mainland of China and the whole world rapidly. On March 4, Beijing Ditan Hospital confirmed the existence of SARS-CoV-2 in the cerebrospinal fluid by gene sequencing, indicating the neurotropic involvement of SARS-CoV-2. ⋯ In particular, we focused on its neurological manifestations and specific pathogenesis, as well as its comparison with other viral respiratory infections. Finally, we further summarized the significance of the neuroinvasion and the follow-up issues that need to be paid attention to by scientists, so as to help neurologists understand the influence of SARS-CoV-2 on nervous system better and promote the accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment of COVID-19.

The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score has been reported to be around 2.5 points in cervical myelopathy. This study sought to define significant predictive factors on achieving the MCID following laminoplasty in a large series of patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). A total of 485 consecutive patients with CSM (295 males and 190 females; mean age: 67.0 years; age range: 42-91 years) who underwent laminoplasty were prospectively enrolled. ⋯ Univariate logistic regression analysis showed the predictive factors with a shorter duration of CSM symptoms, lower preoperative JOA scores, absence of hypertension, no use of anticoagulant/antiplatelet agents, and nonsmoking status. Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined that the duration of CSM symptoms (odds ratio: 0.771, 95% confidence interval: 0.705-0.844; p < 0.01) was the only significant predictive factor for achieving JOA scores of ≥2.5 points. An important predictor of MCID achievement following laminoplasty was shorter duration of CSM symptoms.

Venous air embolism (VAE) during craniotomy operation with semi-sitting position is closely related to intracranial venous pressure. The objective of current study was to explore the relationship between intracranial venous pressure and VAE during operation with semi-sitting position. ⋯ The pressure of intracranial sinus could be continuously monitored by catheterization at jugular bulb. JBP monitoring could be used for prediction of intraoperative VAE. The rate of intraoperative VAE was significantly increased when JBP was negative relative to atmosphere pressure.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed significant changes to resident education and workflow. However, the impact of the pandemic on U. S. neurosurgery residents has not been well characterized. ⋯ S. neurosurgery residents. We report a moderate burnout rate and a paradoxically high career satisfaction rate among neurosurgery residents. Understanding modifiable stressors during the COVID-19pandemic may help to formulate interventions to mitigate burnout and improve career satisfaction among residents.

Research productivity is a vital component to an academic neurosurgeon's career. We sought to evaluate gender differences in NIH funding among faculty in neurological surgery departments. NIH funding awarded to PIs of neurological surgery departments from 2014 to 2019 were obtained and analyzed for gender differences in funding trends, with attention to terminal degree and academic rank, as well as publication range in length of years and h-index. 79.4% of all NIH grants were awarded to male PIs, with the remaining 20.5% given to their female counterparts. ⋯ Differences in mean NIH funding per grant approached but did not reach statistical significance between men and women (P = 0.122). When stratified for academic rank, there was a significant difference in mean NIH funding per grant between men and women on the associate professor level (p < 0.005), with women exceeding men in funding at this academic level, with other academic ranks remaining non-significant. Overall, male neurosurgeons receive significantly more total NIH grant funding than their female counterparts, except at the level of associate professor where women were found to surpass men.
