Depression symptoms and substance abuse in adolescents with asthma.
Depression and risk behaviors occur often in adolescents in the United States, but their frequency in youth with asthma is not well documented. ⋯ National rates of depression and associated risk behaviors in youth with asthma have not been previously reported, indicate a need to screen adolescents with asthma for depression, and suggest that risk behaviors in this population may signal heightened need for intervention.

Comparative StudyDifferent effects of sensitization to mites and pollens on asthma symptoms and spirometric indices in children: a population-based cohort study.
We have previously shown that long-term exposure of children to a highly polluted urban compared with a rural environment is associated with subclinical airway narrowing and increased prevalence of atopy. ⋯ Our results indicate that sensitization to mites is associated with insidious involvement of large and small airways, whereas sensitization to pollens is associated with childhood wheezing at the age of 8 to 10 years. Subsequent loss of these associations implies that risk factors other than allergy influence airway disease at a later age.

Detection of IgE antibodies to bacitracin using a commercially available streptavidin-linked solid phase in a patient with anaphylaxis to triple antibiotic ointment.
Bacitracin is a commonly used topical antibiotic that has on occasion been reported to cause anaphylaxis. Evidence of the role of bacitracin specific IgE in such reactions has been demonstrated by skin testing. Because of the potential for provoking a systemic reaction by skin testing, it would be advantageous to develop an in vitro test for bacitracin specific IgE. ⋯ We demonstrate the presence of IgE antibodies to bacitracin in a patient with anaphylaxis to triple antibiotic ointment using a recently described procedure for producing custom allergen solid phases for immunoassay.
