Children with asthma have been reported to be at increased risk for intraoperative bronchospasm. Current medical literature focuses on this problem in adult patients. This is a report of our experience in children. ⋯ This study demonstrates that asthmatic children appropriately prepared for surgery do not appear to have an increased risk for adverse outcome. The children treated with more than inhaled beta-2 agonists were those who had more severe asthma, recent viral infection, recent exacerbation of asthma, or recent hospitalization for asthma.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialA comparison of bronchodilator responses to albuterol delivered by ultrasonic versus jet nebulization in moderate to severe asthma.
Nebulization of beta-agonists is preferred as a mode of treatment in moderate to severe asthma. Few studies, however, have compared its use in this population using an ultrasonic versus a jet nebulizer. ⋯ In summary, the ultrasonic and the jet nebulizer produced comparable bronchodilator responses to albuterol in stable moderately to severely asthmatic patients.

Comparative StudyComparison between allergen-induced and exercise-induced asthma with respect to the late asthmatic response, airway responsiveness, and Creola bodies in sputum.
The difference between allergen-induced asthma and exercise-induced asthma with respect to the late asthmatic response and airway responsiveness has not been well elucidated. ⋯ We conclude that less airway inflammation was provoked by exercise-induced asthma resulting in less epithelial damage and no increase of airway responsiveness in contrast to allergen-induced asthma.

An intervention program to reduce the hospitalization cost of asthmatic patients requiring intubation.
Asthma is the single disease that accounts for the largest proportion of total health care cost in the US. ⋯ The intervention--which included education, specialist care, regular outpatient visits, and access to an emergency call service--significantly reduced the cost of asthma care in our population of patients intubated for asthma.

Fetal exposure to involuntary maternal smoking and childhood respiratory disease.
Several studies have now gone beyond the effects of smoking during pregnancy to examine the effects of involuntary maternal smoke exposure on fetal development. A link has also been indicated between postnatal environmental smoke exposure and long-term respiratory problems in infants. ⋯ Passive maternal exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy is associated with increased incidence of asthma and supports other research findings that children born of mothers who are passively exposed to smoke during pregnancy are at risk for patterns of negative developmental outcomes.
