Little is known about the natural history of non-traumatic compressive mononeuropathies. To improve patient management, prognostic factors and outcome in patients with non-traumatic peroneal and radial mononeuropathies were studied. ⋯ The present study shows a good prognosis for spontaneous recovery after non-traumatic acute-onset compressive peroneal and radial mononeuropathies. Patients with denervation on needle electromyography, older age and severe initial weakness have a poorer prognosis and should be closely monitored to facilitate timely surgery whenever weakness persists. Peripheral nerve ultrasound seems to be of limited prognostic value in these mononeuropathies.

Obesity and impaired cognitive functioning in the elderly: a population-based cross-sectional study (NEDICES).
Studies of high body mass index (BMI) and cognition in the elderly have shown conflicting results. While some studies have shown a detrimental effect of high BMI on cognitive function, others have observed beneficial effects on cognition. Our aim was to assess cognitive function in a large population-based sample of overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m(2) ) and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2) ) community-dwelling elderly participants compared with their counterparts with BMI < 25 kg/m(2) (i.e. controls) living in the same population. ⋯ In this large population sample, overweight and obese participants performed poorer on formal neuropsychological tests than their counterparts with BMI < 25 kg/m(2) . These results support the hypothesis of a detrimental effect of high BMI on impaired cognition in the elderly.

Meta Analysis
Replication and meta-analysis of common variants identifies a genome-wide significant locus in migraine.
Genetic factors contribute to the aetiology of the prevalent form of migraine without aura (MO) and migraine with typical aura (MTA). Due to the complex inheritance of MO and MTA, the genetic background is still not fully established. In a population-based genome-wide association study by Chasman et al. (Nat Genet 2011: 43: 695-698), three common variants were found to confer risk of migraine at a genome-wide significant level (P < 5 × 10(-8) ). We aimed to evaluate the top association single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the discovery set by Chasman et al. in a primarily clinic-based Danish and Icelandic cohort. ⋯ TSPAN-2 encodes an integral membrane protein involved in oligodendrogenesis. This new finding supports the plausible implication of neuroglia in the pathophysiology of MO and MTA.
