Percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) thermal ablation of rabbit tumors embedded in fat: a model for RF ablation of breast tumors.
To develop an experimental tumor model for RF ablation of breast tumors surrounded by fat and to investigate the minimally invasive treatment of such tumors by saline-enhanced RF ablation monitored by ultrasound (US). ⋯ VX2 tumors are implantable into hypovascular adipose tissue with a high success rate and may be used as a model for RF ablation of breast tumors. B-mode US is not suitable for guiding RF ablation of tumors embedded in fat. The method appears to be more successful with smaller tumors.

Invest Radiol 2001;36:178-185. ⋯ Both 201Tl uptake and 99mTc-teboroxime kinetic parameters were well correlated with flow. The 99mTc-teboroxime washin parameters offer semiquantitative flow values and provide greater defect contrast than can be obtained with 201Tl uptake values.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialA clinical comparison of the safety and efficacy of MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine) and Omniscan (Gadodiamide) in magnetic resonance imaging in patients with central nervous system pathology.
The safety and diagnostic efficacy of MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine) in the central nervous system (CNS) were evaluated in a double-blind, multicenter, phase III clinical trial. ⋯ Gadobenate dimeglumine is comparable to gadodiamide in terms of safety and efficacy for imaging of CNS lesions, with a possible advantage in imaging applications owing to enhanced T1 relaxivity.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialDetection of intracranial metastases: a multicenter, intrapatient comparison of gadobenate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI with routinely used contrast agents at equal dosage.
To compare gadobenate dimeglumine (MultiHance) with other commercially available MRI contrast agents for the detection of intracranial metastases. ⋯ Gadobenate dimeglumine proved to be a more efficacious agent than comparator contrast agents for the detection of intracranial metastatic lesions: superior efficacy was noted by both reviewers for total lesion count as well as for sensitivity and positive predictive value for lesion detection. The higher relaxivity of gadobenate dimeglumine might explain the superior sensitivity of gadobenate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI for the detection of central nervous system metastases.

Acute and subacute physiological and histological studies of the central nervous system after intrathecal gadolinium injection in the anesthetized rat.
To determine the acute physiological and subacute neurohistological effects of gadopentetate dimeglumine (GdD) administered intrathecally. ⋯ Intrathecally administered GdD was accompanied by no significant change in any of the physiologic or histologic parameters examined. Based on the relatively short time interval between GdD treatment and histologic examination, the neural tissue abnormalities (gliosis/inflammation) observed in two animals were judged to be incidental and likely due to prior chronic pre-existing processes such as viral infection. Although additional studies are required to verify the safety and effectiveness of intrathecal GdD in humans, data from the present study in animals provide evidence that when intrathecal GdD is used in doses sufficient to improve MRI of the cerebrospinal fluid compartment, it is likely to be accompanied by a low incidence of acute changes in neural function or structure.
