The aim of this study was to investigate content validity of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Sets for low back pain (LBP), by examining whether common activities reported as difficult to perform are included in the Core Sets. ⋯ The Comprehensive Core Set for LBP to a large degree contains daily life and work-related activities frequently reported as difficult to perform by patients with long-lasting LBP. The categories, however, are very broad and do not provide specified descriptions of the most frequently reported activity limitations such as sitting, standing and walking. The Brief Core Set does not include categories for frequently reported activities such as pulling/pushing and leisure/recreation activities. ICF Core Sets for LBP seem suitable for obtaining a gross overview of the patients' functional limitations, but do not give sufficient information from a therapeutic point of view.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether individuals with anterior glenohumeral joint (GHJ) instability exhibit different scapular orientation from individuals with healthy shoulders in a planar shoulder movement and a functional three-dimensional (3D) reaching task. ⋯ Results of this study show that scapular orientation changes associated with shoulder abduction and functional reaching activities were similar in people with GHJ instability and those with healthy shoulders. The current study suggests that anterior GHJ instability has little impact on scapular kinematics during upper limb movements in a chronic condition without pain, muscle weakness or limited range of motion. Altered scapular kinematics may not contribute to the high recurrence rate of anterior GHJ dislocation.

Respiratory muscle strength, the six-minute walk test and quality of life in Chagas cardiomyopathy.
Patients with heart failure disease develop respiratory and functional limitations and suffer from the negative influence on their quality of life. This study was designed to evaluate respiratory muscle strength and its relationship to functional capacity, quality of life and rate of perceived exertion in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy. ⋯ The inspiratory muscle strength is reduced, and the decreased quality of life has a negative influence on the physical and emotional aspects of the patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy. No correlation was found between perceived exertion and the reduction of respiratory muscle strength.

Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is a common and disabling condition in the population. Interventions are often evaluated with patient-rated outcome measures. The purpose of this study was to develop a simple clinician-rated measure to detect difficulties in the execution of movement-related tasks among patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. ⋯ The Shoulder Activity Scale showed acceptable reliability in a sample of outpatients at a hospital, rated by clinicians experienced in shoulder rehabilitation. The validity of the scale should be investigated in future studies before application to common practice. © 2013 The Authors. Physiotherapy Research International published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The study sought to evaluate validity and reliability of the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia in patients with cervical radiculopathy. ⋯ The Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire may be recommended for test-retest evaluations because 'good' reliability was found. The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia had only 'moderate' test-retest reliability, and this should be considered when using this scale in test-retest evaluations. Both questionnaires can discriminate between patients with cervical radiculopathy and healthy subjects.
