Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Comparison of hemorrhoidal treatments: a meta-analysis.
To determine whether any method of hemorrhoid therapy has been shown to be superior in randomized trials. ⋯ Rubber-band ligation is recommended as the initial mode of therapy for grades 1 to 3 hemorrhoids. Although hemorrhoidectomy showed better response, it is associated with more complications and pain than rubber-band ligation. Thus, it should be reserved for patients whose hemorrhoids fail to respond to rubber-band ligation.

To document the current practice pattern for the treatment of splenic injuries in one Canadian trauma centre and to identify factors that determined which method was employed. ⋯ The finding in this report of an increase in observational treatment of splenic injuries represents a shift in practice from a previous Canadian report and is in keeping with recent published trends from the United States. Future studies are needed to assess whether any strong regional practice pattern variations in the management of blunt splenic injuries exists in other trauma centres across Canada.

To determine whether routine nutrition assessment parameters and body composition change after nutritional support in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and whether the changes, if any, are related to cumulative energy and fluid balances. ⋯ Changes in routine nutrition assessment parameters and body composition are slightly affected by fluid balance but not by energy balance; thus, they are not specific indicators of the adequacy of nutritional support in ICU patients. Improved nutrition assessment parameters are required to better monitor the response to nutritional support in critically ill patients.

To report a burn unit's experience with chemical burns and to discuss the fundamental principles in managing chemical burns. ⋯ The key principles in the management of chemical burns include removal of the chemical, copious irrigation, limited use of antidotes, correct estimation of the extent of injury, identification of systemic toxicity, treatment of ocular contacts and management of chemical inhalation injury. Individualized treatment is emphasized.
