A 62-year-old Japanese female with primary lung adenocarcinoma received seven cycles of nivolumab as an eighth line of chemotherapy until she presented with hemoptysis. After transcatheter arterial embolization therapy, she received subsequent chemotherapy with paclitaxel and S-1. Four weeks later, a chest computed tomography examination revealed infiltrative shadows mainly in the right lung field, in addition to enlargement of the lung metastasis in the right middle lung lobe. ⋯ Corticosteroid therapy not only improved the infiltrative shadows but also reduced the lung metastasis. Even after the infiltrative shadows improved, the lung metastasis reduced further. This phenomenon resembles manifestation of pseudoprogression during treatments with immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as nivolumab.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations occur in about 50% of Asian patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients with advanced NSCLC and EGFR mutations derive clinical benefit from treatment with EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). This study assessed the efficacy and safety of adjuvant icotinib without chemotherapy in EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients undergoing resection of stage IB-IIIA. ⋯ Icotinib as adjuvant therapy is effective in patients harboring EGFR mutations after complete resection, with an acceptable AE profile. Further trials with larger sample sizes might confirm the efficiency of adjuvant TKI in selected patients.

This article describes a pilot study evaluating a novel liquid biopsy system for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The electric field-induced release and measurement (EFIRM) method utilizes an electrochemical biosensor for detecting oncogenic mutations in biofluids. ⋯ Our study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing EFIRM to rapidly, non-invasively, and conveniently detect epidermal growth factor receptor mutations in the saliva of patients with NSCLC, with results corresponding perfectly with the results of cobas tissue genotyping.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are connected with a poor outcome in cancer patients. We aimed to investigate the impact of cancer on the effectiveness of cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) to predict right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in acute PE. ⋯ cTnI is effective for predicting RVD in PE patients with and without cancer. However, the effectiveness of cTnI to predict RVD was higher in PE patients without cancer than in those with cancer or a history of cancer.

Lung cancer is currently the leading cause of cancer-related death in China and western countries for both men and women. Overall, the five-year survival rate of lung cancer is approximately 15%, whereas the five-year survival for patients with surgically resected early-stage disease is 60-80%. Screening is conceptually a good strategy for reducing the mortality rate of lung cancer. ⋯ More results from European randomized controlled trials are expected in the next few years. Recently, a number of lung cancer screening studies using LDCT have been initiated in China. This article briefly summarizes the results of the current and previous lung cancer screening trials worldwide, and focuses on the current status of LDCT lung cancer screening in China.
