Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Comparison of Craniotomy versus Decompressive Craniectomy for Acute Subdural Hematoma: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is a common critical neurosurgical condition, often requiring immediate surgical intervention. Craniotomy and decompressive craniectomy are the 2 mainstay surgical approaches. This comprehensive review and meta-analysis aims to summarize the existing evidence and compare the outcomes of these 2 procedures. ⋯ Our findings suggest that craniotomy is associated with better clinical outcomes and lower mortality compared to decompressive craniectomy for ASDH, but a higher rate of residual subdural hematoma. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to validate our findings.

Radiation-associated Vestibular Schwannomas: Case Series and Literature Review.
Radiation treatment, particularly at a young age, creates theoretical risk for long-term adverse radiation effects, including the development of malignancy. The literature is sparse on radiation-induced vestibular schwannomas (VSs). ⋯ The development of VS following radiation exposure appears rare and our understanding of the condition remains incomplete. Further studies are required to determine the best management of these patients and determine whether there is a causative relationship between radiation exposure and the development of VS.

Hydrocephalus and the first report of an external ventriculostomy: the contributions of Fabrici d'Acquapendente in the Italian Renaissance.
In our historical study, we are unveiling one of the very first surgical treatments of hydrocephalus originally scripted in Latin by Fabrici d'Acquapendente and then transcribed into the French language by Chez Pierre Ravaud. During the European Renaissance, Italian pioneering surgeon Fabricid'Acquapendente illustrated the technique performed at that time. Fabrici described the drainage of fluid for hydrocephalus using the insertion of a cannula. ⋯ Drainage of the fluid may have still occurred from the extracranial space. Moreover, we are unaware of how long the cannula was kept in place. Nonetheless, Fabrici d'Acquapendente may be considered among the first in Italy and possibly in Europe to lay down the foundations for external ventricular drainage system for hydrocephalus.

Central nervous system siderosis associated with multiple cerebral aneurysms: literature review and description of an additional case.
Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system is a rare disease characterized by deposition of hemosiderin along the leptomeninges due to chronic or recurrent bleeding into the subarachnoid space. The association of unruptured intracranial aneurysm (IA) and cortical SS is quite rare. ⋯ Our literature review found 24 reported cases of unruptured IA associated with cortical SS. The possible source for leakages could be neovessels visible in IA walls. The case reported illustrates an uncommon presentation of recurrent bleeding from an IA as a source of SS. The presence of an apparently unruptured IA surrounded by cortical SS on imaging studies is of high relevance as this should be considered a sign of aneurysm wall instability and should indicate prompt treatment.

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are benign tumors often monitored over time, with measurement techniques for assessing growth rates subject to significant interobserver variability. Automatic segmentation of these tumors could provide a more reliable and efficient for tracking their progression, especially given the irregular shape and growth patterns of VS. ⋯ Accurate measurement of VS growth is a complex process, with volumetric analysis currently appearing more reliable than linear measurements. Automatic segmentation, despite its challenges, offers a promising avenue for future investigation. Robust well-generalized models could potentially improve the efficiency of tracking tumor growth, thereby augmenting clinical decision-making. Further work needs to be done to develop more robust models, address the domain shift, and enable secure data sharing for wider applicability.
