Inflammatory response is closely associated with secondary brain injury and pneumonia in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). In this study, we aimed to investigate the value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immunoinflammatory index (SII) in the development of pneumonia in ICH patients 30 days after surgery. ⋯ In the course of ICH, NLR, PLR, and SII increased and then decreased and peaked at 48 hours postoperatively. The SII3 was the best predictor of the occurrence of pneumonia postoperatively in ICH patients.

To evaluate variability in aneurysm detection and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) software as a screening tool by comparing conventional computed tomography angiography (CTA) images (standard care) with AI software. ⋯ AI has the potential to increase the diagnosis of unruptured intracranial aneurysms. However, it must be used as an adjacent tool within the standard of care due to limited applicability in real-world settings.

One strategy to increase the availability of neurosurgical services in underserved regions within Sub-Saharan African countries is to create new residency training programs outside of cosmopolitan cities where programs may already exist. In 2016 Tenwek Hospital in rural western Kenya began offering full-time neurosurgical services and in 2020 inaugurated a residency training program. This review highlights the operative epidemiology of the first 5 years of the hospital's neurosurgical department. ⋯ The neurosurgical caseload of a rural hospital in an underserved area can provide not only an adequate neurosurgical volume, but a robust and varied exposure that is necessary for training safe and competent surgeons who are willing to remain in their countries of origin.

Single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) is an emerging imaging modality that identifies sites of heightened bone metabolism in response to increased stresses. The relationship between sacroiliac (SI) joint radiotracer uptake and anatomic biomechanical parameters is poorly understood. ⋯ Increased pelvic incidence and pelvic tilt angles are associated with SPECT/CT uptake at the SI joint, which may reflect altered biomechanics at the spinopelvic junction. SPECT/CT may be a valuable tool to assess SI degeneration. Future studies are warranted to better characterize the clinical applications of these findings.

This retrospective study assesses the influence of osteoporosis on the short-term clinical outcomes of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) surgery in patients with lumbar degenerative diseases (LDDs), focusing on complications, pain intensity, and quality of life (QOL) improvements. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the impact of osteoporosis on the short-term clinical outcomes following LLIF surgery in LDD patients, with a particular focus on the incidence of cage subsidence (CS) and overall patient well-being postoperatively. ⋯ Osteoporosis increases the risk of CS in LLIF surgery for LDD patients but does not affect short-term pain relief and QOL improvements.
