Multicenter StudyIdentifying Pediatric Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock: Accuracy of Diagnosis Codes.
To evaluate accuracy of 2 established administrative methods of identifying children with sepsis using a medical record review reference standard. ⋯ Sepsis specific International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes identify pediatric patients with severe sepsis in administrative data more accurately than a combination of codes for infection plus organ dysfunction.

Multicenter StudyAssociation between Hospital Volume and Within-Hospital Intensive Care Unit Transfer for Sickle Cell Disease in Children's Hospitals.
To assess the relationship between hospital volume and intensive care unit (ICU) transfer among hospitalized children with sickle cell disease (SCD). ⋯ Children's hospitals vary substantially in their transfer of children with SCD to the ICU according to hospital volumes. Understanding the practices used by different institutions may help explain the variability in ICU transfer among hospitals caring for children with SCD.

Postoperative Hyperglycemia and 4-Year Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Children Operated for Congenital Heart Disease.
To study the long-term neurodevelopmental effects of hyperglycemia in infant bypass surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD). ⋯ Hyperglycemia is common in the early postoperative course after infant bypass surgery for CHD and normalizes within 48 hours. Hyperglycemia has no adverse effect on long-term neurodevelopmental outcome.

Clinical TrialOverweight, Obesity, and Body Composition in 3.5- and 7-Year-Old Swedish Children Born with Marginally Low Birth Weight.
To assess the prevalence of overweight/obese children and to explore body composition in a Swedish cohort of preschool children born with marginally low birth weight (MLBW, ie, 2000-2500 g). ⋯ Children with MLBW had lower BMI and did not show increased risk of overweight or obesity up to 7 years. Nevertheless, the BMI in MLBW children was positively correlated to growth-velocity in infancy.

A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Obtaining Blood Cultures in Children Hospitalized for Community-Acquired Pneumonia.
To determine the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of universal vs targeted approach to obtaining blood cultures in children hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). ⋯ This decision analysis model suggests that a targeted approach to obtaining blood cultures in children hospitalized with CAP may be clinically effective, cost-saving, and reduce unnecessary testing.
