Severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a complication of hormonal therapy for in vitro fertilization and carries the risk of renal failure. The injection of 6% hydroxyethyl starch has been used as a preventive measure. ⋯ Ten percent hydroxyethyl starch is an efficient plasma expander. It is safe, biohazard free and cost-effective. It seems to effectively control severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and to overcome acute prerenal failure. Larger prospective studies are necessary to further evaluate its role in the treatment of severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Minilaparoscopic ovarian biopsy performed under conscious sedation in women with premature ovarian failure.
To evaluate the feasibility of a bilateral multiple ovarian biopsy through minilaparoscopy under local anesthesia and conscious sedation and to assess the efficacy of this technique as compared to the traditional laparoscopic approach. ⋯ Minilap allows the performance of bilateral, multiple ovarian biopsy under local anesthesia and conscious sedation in association with chromoperturbation and the obtaining a sufficient amount of ovarian tissue for histopathologic diagnosis. Intraperitoneal lidocaine administration and ropivacaine infiltration of the trocar sites were beneficial for patients undergoing operative minilap in a day-surgery setting. The effect of these drugs was obviously temporary; however, low postoperative pain scores and low additional analgesic requirement permitted early discharge, within two hours after surgery.

Pyogenic granuloma is a benign lesion of unknown etiology that occurs in the skin and mucous membranes. It has been reported as a common lesion of the oral cavity and, less commonly, the nasal cavity. Although its etiology is unclear, pyogenic granuloma has long been associated with pregnancy, oral contraceptives and trauma. The term pregnancy tumor has been used to reflect the association with pregnancy; nevertheless, pyogenic granuloma is often misdiagnosed in obstetric patients. ⋯ Pyogenic granuloma is a rapidly growing lesion that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any gravid patient with a mass in the oral or nasal cavity. The lesion may result in complications of the pregnancy, and management should be individualized for each patient.

To evaluate clinical prognostic factors for local recurrence of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma after primary surgical treatment. ⋯ These results suggest that vulvar squamous cell carcinoma local recurrence after a primary surgical procedure is related to poor tumor prognostic factors (number of groin nodes containing tumor metastasis and FIGO stage IVa). On multivariate analysis, the presence of metastasis in two or more groin nodes was a powerful factor related to local recurrence. Postoperative radiotherapy to the vulva for such patients with a high risk of local recurrence is advisable.

Review Case Reports
Hemorrhagic ascites associated with endometriosis. A case report.
Endometriosis associated with massive, bloody ascites is an unusual occurrence. This report draws attention to this condition as a complication of endometriosis, with the description of a case and a review of 31 others. ⋯ Bloody ascites should be considered a complication of endometriosis, especially in nulliparous women of childbearing age with abdominal distention, a pelvic mass, dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss and eventual pleural effusion, suggesting a diagnosis of ovarian malignancy.
