Papillary muscle relocation in conjunction with valve annuloplasty improve repair results in severe ischemic mitral regurgitation.
The incidence of recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) after restrictive annuloplasty (RA) was 5% to 20% in several reports. There are many opinions in favor of adding subvalvular procedures to RA to reduce the tenting forces and improve the repair results. ⋯ PPM relocation in conjunction to mitral annuloplasty is an easy and safe method and can be performed without an increase in-hospital mortality. This technique reduced the tenting area and coaptation depth compared with isolated RA, leading to improvement in the incidence of recurrent MR. The PPM group of patients experienced fewer cardiac-related events.

Effect of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on expression of selected proteins involved in regulation of apoptosis in the brain of newborn piglets after cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest.
The study objective was to investigate the effect of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor on the expression of proteins that regulate apoptosis in newborn piglet brain after cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. ⋯ In the piglet model of hypoxic brain injury, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor decreases proapoptotic signaling, particularly in the striatum.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyBeneficial effects of the CorCap cardiac support device: five-year results from the Acorn Trial.
The CorCap cardiac support device (Acorn Cardiovascular, Inc, St Paul, Minn) is the first device that specifically addresses ventricular remodeling in heart failure by reducing wall stress. We previously reported outcomes from the Acorn randomized trial to a common closing date (22.9 months of follow-up). This report summarizes results of extended followup to 5 years. ⋯ These cumulative data demonstrate the sustained reverse remodeling of the left ventricle and the long-term safety and efficacy of the CorCap cardiac support device as an adjunctive therapy for patients with heart failure who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy.
