Comparative StudyEffects of glutaraldehyde concentration, pretreatment time, and type of tissue (porcine versus bovine) on postimplantation calcification.
Our objective was to evaluate the effects of glutaraldehyde (GA) concentration, time of pretreatment, and type of tissue (porcine vs bovine) on quantitative and qualitative postimplant calcification of tissues. ⋯ Increasing GA concentration leads to greater calcification with a sharp rise in calcium levels above a concentration of 0.625%, in both bovine and porcine pericardial tissues. At a concentration of 0.625%, increasing pretreatment time is inversely related to tissue calcification for porcine pericardium but not for bovine pericardium. Differences in the tissue composition in terms of cellular content and composition of the extracellular matrix could account for the observed findings.

Prophylactic amiodarone reduces junctional ectopic tachycardia after tetralogy of Fallot repair.
Junctional ectopic tachycardia is common after pediatric heart surgery. After tetralogy of Fallot repair, the incidence of junctional ectopic tachycardia may be as high as 15% to 20%. We introduced prophylactic amiodarone for tetralogy repair. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the prophylactic amiodarone. ⋯ Prophylactic amiodarone is well tolerated and significantly associated with a decreased incidence of junctional ectopic tachycardia after tetralogy repair.

Preoperative predicted risk does not fully explain the association between red blood cell transfusion and mortality in coronary artery bypass grafting.
Perioperative red blood cell transfusion is associated with increased morbidity and mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Whether transfusion is a cause of these outcomes or serves as a surrogate for a high-risk patient population remains uncertain. This retrospective study tested the hypothesis that increased preoperative risk profile of patients receiving transfusion would explain the relationship between red blood cell transfusion and operative mortality in isolated CABG. ⋯ The association between red blood cell transfusion and mortality after CABG is highly significant and independent of increased preoperative risk status. The correlation persists after controlling for increased PROM.

Clinical outcomes of prophylactic Damus-Kaye-Stansel anastomosis concomitant with bidirectional Glenn procedure.
We evaluated prophylactic Damus-Kaye-Stansel (DKS) anastomosis in association with the timing of a bidirectional Glenn (BDG) procedure as second-stage palliation aiming at Fontan completion to prevent late systemic ventricular outflow tract obstruction. ⋯ Regardless of a significant reduction in systemic ventricular volume, DKS anastomosis concomitant with a BDG procedure shows promise for a nonobstructive systemic ventricular outflow tract after a Fontan operation.

Comparative StudyLevosimendan is superior to epinephrine in improving myocardial function after cardiopulmonary bypass with deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in rats.
To investigate effects of epinephrine and levosimendan on cardiac function after rewarming from deep hypothermia. ⋯ Levosimendan has better inotropic and lusitropic effects than epinephrine during rewarming from deep hypothermic circulatory arrest with cardiopulmonary bypass.
