A postpneumonic tension cavity (pneumatocele) is defined as subpleurally trapped air originating from interstitial emphysema following necrobiotic changes of lung tissue. We recommend for the treatment of large pneumatoceles intercostal drainage and continuous suctioning for several days to avoid tension pneumothorax and development of persistent fibrous pseudocysts.

518 stool specimens from patients with acute gastroenteritis, presumed to suffer from infections with enteropathogenic E. coli, were screened for rotavirus. Rotaviruses were found in 23.3%. ⋯ In 4 cases enteropathogenic E. coli were found in addition to rotaviruses. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was more sensitive than complement fixation for the detection of rotaviruses and should be used for the differential diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis.

A 12 year boy with an isolated head injury and subdural hematoma developed neurogenic pulmonary edema and intraoperatively a low cardiac output syndrome. The postoperatively depressed cardiac function and hemorrhagic pulmonary edema were treated with Dobutamine and Nitroglycerin given intravenously. ⋯ Nitroglycerin applied in a low dosage with exclusive venodilator effect was added for treatment of pulmonary edema and left ventricular failure. About 2 1/2 h after the start of the treatment pulmonary edema had subsided and circulation was stabilized.

An unusual case of a 9 year old girl with primary pericarditis and cardiac tamponade due to Hemophilus influenzae is reported. Meningitis or manifestations in other organs could be excluded. Despite pericardial drainage for three weeks beginning at the 11th day of illness, a chambered pericardial effusion developed, which could be localized more exactly by cross-sectional echocardiography than by axial computerized tomography.
