93 central venous catheters (77 Broviac und 16 ports) were inserted in 79 children with malignant diseases between 1980 and 1988. The median duration of use for Broviac was 5.8 months (0.2-24 months) and for ports 7.5 months (0.8-44 months). The total duration of use was 14 658 days for Broviac catheters and 5970 days for ports. ⋯ Complication rates were not significantly different in both systems. The incidence of infections in Broviac catheters was 5% or 0.27 per 1000 days of use, respectively, which is lower than reported by other studies. The consistency in catheter-care procedures can decrease the rates of complications.

Two nearly drowned, 2 9/12 and 3 6/12 years old boys with profound hypothermia were admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit with all signs of clinical death. Both patients could be rewarmed and oxygenated by extracorporeal circulation. ⋯ The second one survived without any defect. Rewarming of cold-water nearly-drowned patients by extra-corporeal circulation seems to be a very effective way of treatment.

Over the last seven years, we from the Dept. of Pediatrics at the University of Erlangen have recorded an increase in the rate of children admitted because of aspirated foreign bodies. Despite the most modern methods of bronchoscopy extraction available nowadays, an inhaled foreign body can become a serious matter if it results in acute respiratory distress or - and this occurs much more frequently - if it remains for a long period unrecognized in the bronchial system and, as a result of intense reactions of the mucous membrane, can then only be extracted with great difficulty. ⋯ In these 94 case studies we have reported case histories, examination findings as well as radiological diagnosis and stiff bronchoscopy for treatment. Finally, we have discussed suggestions for prevention of this accident.

A thermal epiglottitis after feeding hot food is a rare event in infancy. A 3 month old infant developed typical symptoms of an acute epiglottitis after feeding him hot vegetables. ⋯ A laryngo-tracheobronchoscopy was performed. After 48 h he was extubated.

We describe a case of a three and half month old infant presenting with a congestive heart failure due to hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy. Vitamin D deficiency rickets was found to be the cause for the hypocalcemia. The heart failure responded promptly to adequate Calcium therapy accompanied by usual anticongestive therapy.
