Mortality in Polish intensive care units (ICU) is excessively high. Only a few patients do not require intubation and invasive ventilation throughout the whole ICU treatment period. We aimed to define this population, as pre-emptive admissions of such patients may increase the population which benefits from ICU admission and reduce excessive mortality in Polish ICUs. ⋯ Non-ventilated patients have a high potential for a favourable outcome. Pre‑emptive ICU admissions have a potential to reduce mortality in Polish ICUs.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cause of ischemic stroke (IS). Atrial fibrillation patients are recommended to use oral anticoagulants (OACs) as part of prevention against IS. However, despite having a therapeutic intensity of OAC therapy, IS can still occur in such patients. The aim of our study was to examine the configuration of IS risk factors in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and within the therapeutic INR range (TINR). ⋯ The group of patients with NVAF and TINR is significantly more burdened by other independent common risk factors for stroke.

The association between triglycerides (TG) and cardiovascular diseases is complex. The classification of hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) phenotypes proposed by Fredrickson, Levy and Lees (FLL) helps inform treatment strategies. We aimed to describe levels of several lipoprotein variables from individuals with HTG FLL phenotypes from the Very Large Database of Lipids. ⋯ This observational hypothesis-generating study provides insight into the complexity of lipid metabolism in HTG phenotypes, including less traditional lipid measures such as LDL density, HDL subclasses and Lp(a)-C.

This study was designed to investigate the roles of STAT3 and SMYD3 in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and the regulatory relationship between STAT3 and SMYD3 in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. ⋯ STAT3 may promote chronic lymphocytic leukemia progression through elevating SMYD3 expression. Targeting STAT3 and SMYD3 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The aim of the study was to investigate the underlying functional network brain activity changes in patients with late monocular blindness (MB) and the relationship with their clinical features using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method. ⋯ Late monocular blindness involves brain function network dysfunction in many regions, which might indicate impairment of the visual cortex and other vision-related brain regions in the MBs.
