Stroke is a common neurologic disease associated with fatal outcomes. Kidney dysfunction may be an important predictor of stroke severity and outcome. ⋯ Kidney dysfunction was associated with stroke severity and mortality. However, it was not an independent predictor of neurological outcome.

The aim of this study was to estimate cutoff values of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and calf circumference (CC) for reduced muscle mass and analyze their accuracy in identifying malnutrition among individuals of 65 years of age or older in Bosnia and Herzegovina. ⋯ The study suggested that MUAC and CC may be used as the alternative indicators of muscle mass when other assessment methods are unavailable. Future validation and reliability studies for GLIM using anthropometric parameters as a proxy of reduced muscle mass are needed.

Fistula-in-ano is caused by idiopathic infection of the cryptoglands located in the anal intersphincteric plane when the resultant cryptoglandular abscess drains internally and externally. It is a common surgical disease that responds well to surgical intervention. In cases of recurrent non-healing fistula-in-ano, an underlying cause should be suspected and searched for. ⋯ Few cases of recurrent complex fistula-in-ano had been reported in the literature. However, this is the first time to the best of our knowledge that broomsticks causing non-healing, complex fistula-in-ano that is being reported. We suggest the use of a bending machine instead of mashing broom bunch in the preparation of Ewedu soup which is a delicacy for the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria to eliminate the chances of inadvertent ingestion of broomsticks when eating Ewedu soup.

However, there exists a definitive need to improve oral health awareness thereby ameliorating the overall health of an individual.

Prevalence of Doppler-Derived Left Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction Among Newly Diagnosed Hypertensive Patients.
The initial sign of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), which is caused by remodeling of the left ventricle and left atrium, resulting in impaired relaxation of the left ventricle. LVDD is also partly due to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). If left untreated, LVDD can progress to diastolic heart failure and systolic heart failure. In Western countries, the prevalence of LVDD in long-term hypertensive patients ranges from 40.3% to 60%, but it is more common among hypertensive Nigerians. Since systemic hypertension can be asymptomatic in the early stages, it is important to evaluate LVDD early and control blood pressure to slow down its progression. ⋯ LVDD is highly prevalent among newly diagnosed hypertensive patients, with stage 1 being the most common. Female gender, older age, higher BMI, higher blood pressure, higher LAVI, and higher LVMI were significant predictors of LVDD. Early detection and appropriate management of LVDD may help to prevent adverse cardiovascular outcomes in hypertensive patients.
