To assess the prevalence of spirometric abnormalities in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and its clinical utility in diagnosing OSA. ⋯ Saw-tooth sign was present in 12.3% and the ratio of FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 was found in 26.1% of OSA patients. Obstructive sleep apnea patients who had these abnormalities did not differ from patients who did not have them with regard to age, body mass index, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), desaturation index and other spirometric indices. The presence of saw-tooth sign and FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 was not related to the severity of AHI CONCLUSION: Spirometric abnormalities are not common in OSA patients not known to have underlying chronic lung diseases. Saw-tooth sign and FEF(50)/FIF(50) >1 are not useful in predicting OSA.

To study the safety and benefits of parenteral ketamine and lignocaine infiltration among pediatric surgical patients with co-morbidities that would preclude the use of general anesthesia requiring endotracheal intubation/face mask in a developing country. ⋯ The satisfactory anesthesia and analgesia recorded with this combination, and the low complications observed in the presence of co-morbidity showed that these agents have much to offer in a developing country.

Contributions of Ibn Al-Nafis (1210-1288 AD) to the progress of medicine and urology. A study and translations from his medical works.
This primary-source study of 4 medical works of the 13th century Muslim scholar Ibn Al-Nafis confirmed that his Kitab Al-Mujaz Fi Al-Tibb was authored as an independent book meant to be a handbook for medical students and practitioners not as an epitome of Kitab Al-Qanun of Ibn Sina as thought by recent historians. His huge medical encyclopedia, Al-Shamil, represents a wave of intense scientific activity that spread among the scholars of Cairo and Damascus following the massive destruction of books by Hulako's Army during the devastation of Baghdad in 1258. ⋯ Those discoveries of Ibn Al-Nafis, translated to Latin by Andreas Alpagus printed in Venice in 1547, appeared, 6 years later, in the Christianismi Restituto of Servetus and, in 1555, in the De Fabrica Humani Corporis of Vesalius 2nd edition then in the works of Valvarde 1554, Columbus 1559, Cesalpino 1571, and finally Harvey in 1628. Furthermore, this study documented several other contributions of Ibn Al-Nafis to the progress of human functional anatomy and to advances in medical and surgical practice.

To review the postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) course and early outcome of children with complex atrial isomeric hearts undergoing cardiac surgery for uni-ventricular heart repair. ⋯ Atrial isomerism is frequently associated with complex cardiac defects that often present in the neonatal stage and requires multiple staged cardiac surgeries. The surgical repair and peri-operative management of this group of patients can be difficult, challenging, and with potential risk of significant morbidity or mortality. In our setting, we found the outcome of children with atrial isomerism undergoing uni-ventricular palliation comparable to the literature.
