Difficult Airway Management (DAM) is one of the most important skills for medical practice, especially for anesthesiologists. A seminar of DAM was held in the 51 st annual meeting of Japan Society of Anesthesiologists. It consisted of a 60-minute lecture about ASA difficult airway management algorithm, and a 120-minute hands-on training session using a mid-fidelity human simulator. ⋯ The questionnaire revealed that the most popular technique for DAM was insertion of laryngeal mask airway (ILMA). Otherwise the invasive techniques were difficult to be experienced in the clinical practice. We suspected that the DAM seminar was useful, especially for the invasive technique without substitute training methods under clinical situation.

Comparative Study
[Evaluation by undergraduate medical students of clinical clerkships in the department of anesthesiology--comparison with the evaluation in previous fiscal year].
Clinical Clerkships in the Department of Anesthesiology were evaluated by undergraduate medical students and compared with other clinical departments and those of previous fiscal year 2003. ⋯ Reevaluation of the educational program in our department based on the results of the survey is essential for improvement of the program, and further provision of chances, especially for physical examinations, is also needed for undergraduate students in the program by including palliative medical care program.

Comparative Study
[Comparison of semitransparent colored labels with opaque colored labels for prevention of adverse drug administration].
We made a semitransparent color label to supplement a demerit of an opaque color label for prevention of adverse drug administration, and evaluated whether a semitransparent color label is superior to an opaque color label. ⋯ The semitransparent color label is superior to the opaque color label in discrimination and adhesion.

Case Reports
[Anesthetic management for Cesarean section in a patient with left ventricular noncompaction].
Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a rare disease characterized by heart failure, arrhythmia, and embolic events. We report anesthetic management of a pregnant woman with LVNC. At 24 weeks gestation of the first pregnancy, the patient was scheduled for Cesarean section. ⋯ About 2 years later, the patient also underwent cesarean section under spinal anesthesia at 34 weeks gestation of the second pregnancy, because her cardiac function was almost normal and she was not receiving anticoagulant therapy. Both perioperative courses were uneventful. Careful preoperative assessment and close anesthetic planning are necessary.

[Lumbar epidural morphine for postoperative analgesia in children undergoing Nuss procedure].
We examined the effects of lumbar epidural morphine for postoperative analgesia in children after the Nuss procedure for funnel chest. ⋯ Epidural morphine 30 microg x kg(-1) given at the beginning of operation provided effective analgesia on the 0th postoperative day after the Nuss procedure. However, epidural infusion of morphine 3 microg x kg(-1) x hr(-1) was not effective after the 1st postoperative day. Further study is needed to determine the lumbar epidural infusion dose of morphine adequate for use after the Nuss procedure.
