Implementation of a Low-Dose, High-Frequency Cardiac Resuscitation Quality Improvement Program in a Community Hospital.
In 2015 the American Heart Association launched the Resuscitation Quality ImprovementⓇ (RQIⓇ) Program to address the urgent need to improve in-hospital cardiac arrest survival through a novel competency-based model for health care provider (HCP) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. This innovation differs from the traditional Basic Life Support (BLS) training model by providing self-directed, low-dose, high-frequency CPR skill activities with the objectives of skills mastery and retention. A program implementation study was conducted at the first hospital in the state of Illinois to adopt RQI in 2016. ⋯ Findings demonstrate that the RQI program for ongoing verification of BLS skill and knowledge provides improvements in HCPs' CPR psychomotor competence and confidence/satisfaction using an efficient and sustainable method at a community hospital.

An Ambulatory Antimicrobial Stewardship Initiative to Improve Diagnosis and Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections in Children.
Antibiotic stewardship efforts should standardize treatment of common infections when possible. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in children and require appropriate diagnostic methods and treatment. A pediatric emergency department (ED) identified an opportunity to improve care by standardizing uncomplicated UTI diagnostic testing and treatment according to local bacterial resistance patterns from January 2017 to December 2018. ⋯ This QI initiative achieved standardization of specimen collection and treatment for pediatric UTI in the ED setting, and no adverse outcomes were observed at the institution.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Incorporate Bedside Nurses into Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention.
Antimicrobial stewardship programs exist to promote appropriate antimicrobial use. The Joint Commission has reported that although many US hospitals have implemented basic components of antimicrobial stewardship programs, there now exists a need for innovative, multidisciplinary approaches, including involving frontline clinicians such as bedside nurses. ⋯ This study demonstrates successful engagement of bedside nurses in antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention activities and a measurable impact on meaningful outcomes. More studies of strategies to integrate bedside nurses in antimicrobial stewardship are needed.

Prompting Rounding Teams to Address a Daily Best Practice Checklist in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Implementation of best practices for pediatric ICU (PICU) patients is challenging. The objective of this project was to improve process of care outcomes and clinical outcomes by having a dedicated person (quality champion [QC]) prompt PICU rounding teams to address a daily best practice rounding checklist. ⋯ Prompting PICU rounding teams to address a daily best practice rounding checklist may improve some process of care outcomes. Further study is needed to delineate long-term effects of this initiative.
