Sociodemographic Characteristics of HIV-Associated Dementia in the South Carolina Alzheimer's Disease Registry.
Studies examining the sociodemographic characteristics associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated dementia (HAD) are lacking, especially in the southern United States. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of HAD using South Carolina Alzheimer's Disease Registry data, and examine these characteristics across two time periods. ⋯ We found that younger populations (younger than 74 years), communities of color, men, urban populations, and nursing facility populations were more likely to have HAD. Future research should focus on the association between HAD and risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Extended Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis after Robotic Staging for Endometrial Cancer.
Our objectives were to estimate the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after robotic staging for endometrial cancer and to compare the incidence of VTE in patients who received a single dose of preoperative prophylaxis of enoxaparin with those who received extended postoperative prophylaxis. ⋯ The incidence of VTE following robot-assisted surgical staging for endometrial cancer in this study was 0.67%. No significant difference was found in VTE incidence between the PP group compared with the EP group. Mechanical prophylaxis plus a single dose of preoperative pharmacologic prophylaxis may suffice for low-risk patients following robotic surgical staging for endometrial cancer.

Let the Program Evaluation Committee SOAR: Applying the Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results (SOAR) Framework for Program Evaluation.
Annual program evaluations are important activities of all graduate medical education programs. Although the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education provides general guidelines, there is substantial scope for educational innovation. Strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results (SOAR) is a strengths-based framework for strategic planning. Because SOAR emphasizes positivity and engagement, it is an appealing framework for evaluating graduate medical education programs. Our objective was to demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of SOAR in a program evaluation committee of a fellowship program to generate strategic initiatives. ⋯ SOAR is an innovative and feasible approach to program evaluation that uses trainee engagement to translate and synergize existing program strengths into actionable program improvement.

Racial Disparities in Clinical Outcomes of Emergency Colectomies for Diverticulitis.
The literature suggests that there are ongoing racial disparities in healthcare outcomes between patients in White and non-White populations. As such, we examined the outcomes of patients who underwent an emergency colectomy for diverticulitis. ⋯ In this study, non-White patients developed more complications than did White patients and had longer hospitalizations. These disparities represent a more complex societal issue that cannot be managed perioperatively alone.

Skin Cancer in Non-White Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: Mayo Clinic Experience.
Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) have an increased risk of skin cancer development, but limited data exist on the development pattern of cutaneous malignancies in non-White SOTRs. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics and outcomes of non-White patients who developed skin cancer following solid organ transplantation. ⋯ Our study provides further characterization of the development of skin cancer in non-White SOTRs following transplant and identifies a variety of relevant pre- and posttransplant factors. Despite a long follow-up period, the number of patients identified remained low, which is consistent with the literature, indicating a low incidence of skin cancer development in non-White SOTRs. Continued investigation may allow for a more precise identification of risk factors and their degree of significance.
