Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparative efficacy of ibuprofen, indomethacin, and placebo in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.
Forty-two women with primary dysmenorrhea were successfully enrolled in a double-blind, three-way crossover study in which each patient received either ibuprofen (Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), or a placebo during each of three successive painful menstrual cycles. Thirty-one patients successfully completed the study. ⋯ Ibuprofen was significantly superior to the placebo regarding the number of patients who could pursue normal daily function, whereas indomethacin was not. Four patients reported side effects, all during the indomethacin cycle.

Case ReportsMycobacterium terrae tenosynovitis: chronic infection in a previously healthy individual.

Use of an elemental diet as a nutritionally complete "medical colostomy".
During the past 24 months I have used a defined formula diet (High Nitrogen Vivonex) as a nutritionally complete "medical colostomy" (NCMC) in 16 patients. This diet, via continual gastric drip, provided an average of 2,238 kcal/day and 92.4 gm of protein per day. ⋯ Defined formula diet, used as an NCMC, can give 2.4 times more kcal than clear liquid and provides protein as well. NCMC is a safe, cost-effective way of preventing fecal contamination while providing adequate nutritional support for wound healing.

To determine a reliable first aid topical remedy for jellyfish stings, we investigated several commonly available preparations to determine their ability to prevent nematocyst rupture from sea nettle (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) and Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis) tentacles. The application of a baking soda slurry was a good inhibitor of nematocyst discharge for the nettle and vinegar was a good inhibitor for the man-of-war.

Experience with a multidisciplinary emergency medicine clerkship.
In 1979 a required emergency medicine clerkship was added to the senior curriculum at the Medical College of Virginia. Coordinated by the Department of Surgery but receiving active support from other disciplines, the emergency medicine clerkship combined clinical participation in emergency care with a balanced academic program of lectures, conferences, and advanced cardiac life-support training. The program evolved into a popular and productive experience and stimulated positive changes in the emergency unit at other levels.
