Lupus in Chinese male: a retrospective study of 61 patients.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has traditionally been considered a disease of women, and is uncommon in men. In recent years, several large clinical series of male lupus patients have been reported. As no known data are available for lupus in males from Taiwan, a retrospective analysis of data from male lupus patients was done to determine whether these patients differed from other series of male or female SLE patients in the literature. ⋯ In a review of the 61 ethnic Chinese male lupus patients, a higher frequency of renal disease, malar rash and photosensitivity, but a lower frequency of arthritis and lymphadenopathy, compared to previous reports of Caucasians. There were no significant immunological differences from other series of male lupus, except a lower frequency of anti-dsDNA. In general, poor prognosis was noted for male lupus patients here.

Comparative StudyPulmonary edema and rapid transfusion: the comparison between rapid intravenous and intraarterial infusion in the severely hemorrhagic anesthesized pigs.
Patients with shock often develop pulmonary edema (PE) after rapid and massive fluid supplement and intravenous infusion. Rapid intraarterial infusion (RIA) is often used for fluid supplement in cardiac surgery, but has not yet been applied to treatment of hemorrhagic shock. However, by perfusing the ischemic peripheral organs through RIA, the fluid should flow first through the venous system to the heart and lung in less volume at lower speed. Therefore, the probability of developing PE should be less than that in rapid intravenous infusion (RIV) to the heart and lung in the same condition regarding volume and speed. Accordingly, we compared RIV and RIA in the treatment of hemorrhagic shock (HS) to determine if RIA provides any beneficial effect in reducing the development of PE. ⋯ RIA may be a better choice for fluid replacement in HS in terms of decreasing the development of PE and lessening the release of ETVI and TxB2 in severely hemorrhagic anesthetized pigs. Further human investigation is warranted.

Comparative StudyThyroid function in healthy and sick neonates.
Low serum thyroid hormone concentrations are frequently observed in critically ill patients. Low-birth-weight preterm infants have also been reported to contain lower serum thyroxine (T4) levels when compared with normal term infants. Investigating the differences of the thyroid function between sick and healthy term and preterm infants becomes a worthwhile task. ⋯ Low serum T4, free T4, T3 concentrations are commonly found in sick neonates, whereas serum TSH values are not significantly different between sick and healthy neonates.

Measurement of Chinese lumbar pedicles: with special reference to transpedicular screw fixation.
Thorough understanding of the morphometric parameters of the lumbar pedicles is essential for transpedicular screw fixation. The purpose of this study is to establish a database for proper spinal instrumentations in Chinese patients. ⋯ Transpedicular screw fixation should be tailored on individual basis. Though variation exists, no sufficient evidence can be found to suggest major morphometric differences of the Chinese lumbar pedicles from the studies in the English literature.

Early detection of the tip position and complication of the intra-aortic balloon pump catheter by perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.
Intraoperative verification of the precise balloon position of intra-aortic balloon pump(IABP) is necessary and important. We introduced transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) as one of our routine intraoperative image monitor to accomplish this identification fluently, conveniently and also precisely. ⋯ The application of TEE in the perioperative period helps not only detect IABP complication early but also verify of balloon catheter position quickly. It can replace the conventional role of fluorography.
