[Surgical and anesthetic mortality in Mackay Memorial Hospital 1988-1989].
The mortality associated with 52128 anesthetics administered over two years (1988-1989) at Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, was reported. The frequency of death to which anesthesia contributed was 0.4/10000 (2 cases in 52128 anesthetics). ⋯ There were 25 cases of cardiac arrest with 18 fatal cases (7 cases were recovered after cardiopulmonary resuscitation). The causes of cardiac arrest during anesthesia included anesthetic factors (24%), surgical factors (24%) and patients' pathological factors (52%).

Comparative StudyEvaluation of a rapid tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay for selecting anticancer drugs.
A rapid colorimetric microtiter assay was used in this study to analysis drug cytotoxicity. Through the reduction of tetrazolium salt, MTT [3-(4, 5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide], by living cells to form a blue formazan product. The level of MTT cleavage by viable cells of various origins was found to be in direct proportion to the number of cells (between 500-10,000 cells/well). ⋯ The dye exclusion assay was the most sensitive, followed by the clonogenic and then the MTT assays. The ID50 values obtained from the MTT assay were approximately 3 to 5 times lower than those from the other two methods. Based on these studies, MTT assay appears to be a rapid, convenient, economical and reasonable tool in the initial-stage screening of large number of the in vitro anticancer drugs.

Bronchial adenoma--a heterogenous group of tumors: report of 38 patients.
Thirty-eight cases of bronchial adenoma seen at Taipei VGH during 1976-88 were reviewed. Nine were carcinoid tumors, 14 were mucoepidermoid carcinomas and 15 were cylindromas. There were 21 men and 17 women. ⋯ All types of bronchial adenomas showed malignant potential, mean duration before metastasis was about 2 years (3 months to 4 years), most of them were mucoepidermoid carcinomas (60%). The 5-year survival rate was 11.1% for mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 55.6% for carcinoids and 83.3% for cylindromas. We conclude that the term bronchial adenoma represents a heterogenous group of tumors with considerable malignant potential and should not be ignored by its term of benignity.
