In the tough, competitive environment of international ice hockey, it is vital that a player who sustains a minor facial laceration is returned to play as soon as possible. A method of wound closure that is fast to apply, water resistant, and effective was sought. ⋯ The results are presented and discussed. The tissue adhesive met the criteria set out.

Intramedullary fixation of midclavicular fractures may be a better option than non-operative treatment for high performance/professional athletes because of the potential reduction in recovery time. ⋯ Intramedullary fixation of displaced midclavicular fracture was successful in terms of clinical outcome and rapid resumption of sporting activities. This treatment should be offered to athletes as an alternative to non-operative treatment.

Needlefish injuries, commonly reported in the Indo-Pacific region, have not been previously reported along the European coastlines. This case report describes a penetrating injury to the heel of a professional surfer during competition off the Portuguese coast. Diagnostic as well as therapeutic recommendations are made.

Exercise is an important component of pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic lung disease. ⋯ Physical activity and non-smoking or smoking cessation is associated with maintenance of cardiorespiratory fitness. Change in physical activity habits is associated with change in cardiorespiratory fitness, but respiratory function contributed little to this association during a five year follow up.

The case of an avulsion fracture occurring in an 18 year old athlete after repeated running is presented. The fracture involved the tensor fascia lata muscle and the external oblique abdominal muscle. It was treated by open reduction and internal fixation with two screws. The patient returned to full training, including long distance running, only four weeks after the operation.
