The analysis of the special literature and expert practice during the recent years demonstrated the scientific, practical, and social importance of the expertise of the blast injuries in the time of piece. It is emphasized that the main tasks of expert examination of blast injuries include further studies on the mechanisms of their development, simulation of various blast injuries, the development of criteria for the determination of distance from the site of explosion based on the severity of the injury, investigations into effectiveness of the protective barriers for the human body during explosions, and the creation of methods for testing means of individual body armoured protection. The provisions of a program for current and prospective forensic medical investigations into blast injuries have been formulated.

The objective of the present study was to elucidate the peculiarities of the assessment of harm to human health from maxillofacial and neck injuries accompanied by the infectious process. The case report described in this paper demonstrates that the unfavourable outcome of an injury is not infrequently attributable to the inadequacy and drawbacks of the existing schemes for the provision of medical aid. However, the health status of the victim depends on the life-threatening character of the primary injury and its naturally developing infectious complications.

[Investigations into the topical problems of forensic-medical expertise of gunshot and blast injuries in the works of V.L. Popov and his disciples].
The professional activity of professor V. L. Popov is considered with special reference to the major achievements of himself and his disciples in the field of forensic medical ballistics. ⋯ L. Popov is the founder of the scientific and pedagogical school that was justifiably regarded as the largest in this country and remains as such. The main achievements of this school have been obtained in studies of gunshot injuries.

The authors expound their views of the final goal of specialist training based at a medical higher education institution. They consider the essence of such notions as medical competence, knowledge, abilities, and skills of the future doctors. Moreover, the original approach is proposed to the organization and contents of the lectures, practical work, seminars, and self-guided work of the students seeking to acquire knowledge in forensic medicine and to the development of principles on which to base formation of clinical and expert thinking.

The comparative structural and systemic analysis of 303 forensic medical expert conclusion (acts) made it possible to reveal and systematize errors encountered in forensic medical practice at the stages of investigation, interpretation, and estimation of the obtained results. The authors distinguish between performance errors and cognitive errors in the course of forensic medical expertise. The definition of the notion of "expert error" is proposed. The process of error analysis is described with special reference to forensic medical activities.
