Our purpose is to present a broad review about the principles, early history, evolution, applications, and complications of femtosecond lasers used in refractive and nonrefractive corneal surgical procedures. Femtosecond laser technology added not only safety, precision, and reproducibility to established corneal surgical procedures such as laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and astigmatic keratotomy, but it also introduced new promising concepts such as the intrastromal lenticule procedures with refractive lenticule extraction (ReLEx). Over time, the refinements in laser optics and the overall design of femtosecond laser platforms led to it becoming an essential tool for corneal surgeons. In conclusion, femtosecond laser is a heavily utilized tool in refractive and nonrefractive corneal surgical procedures, and further technological advances are likely to expand its applications.

ReviewTranslamina Cribrosa Pressure Difference as Potential Element in the Pathogenesis of Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy.
The main proven risk factor for glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) is an intraocular pressure (IOP) higher than the pressure sensibility of the optic nerve head allows. Fulfilling Koch postulates, numerous studies have shown that the presence of high IOP leads to GON, that lowering IOP stops the progression of GON, and that a re-increase in IOP again causes the progression of GON. There are, however, many patients with glaucoma who have statistically normal or low IOP, and despite low IOP values, they develop progressing GON. ⋯ Recent experimental and clinical studies have suggested that a low CSFP could be associated with GON in normal-pressure glaucoma. These investigations included studies with an experimental long-term reduction in CSFP in monkeys, population-based studies, and clinical retrospective and prospective investigations on patients with normal-pressure glaucoma. Besides TLCPD, other ocular parameters influenced by CSFP may be choroidal thickness, retinal vein pressure and diameter, occurrence of retinal vein occlusions, and occurrence and severity of diabetic retinopathy.

Evaluation of surgical outcomes for ptosis surgery by face recognition software.
This study was aimed to use the age estimation segment of face recognition software to determine whether patients appeared younger after surgery for aponeurotic ptosis and dermatochalasis. ⋯ The face recognition software may not be influenced by the lid plastic surgery. Many factors other than the width of the palpebral fissure influence the estimation of age by the face recognition software.
