[The significance of Helicobacter pylori infection in the etiology of abdominal pain in children].
Chronic and recurrent abdominal pain are frequent diagnostic problems in school age and adolescent children. The authors examined the IgG antibodies to Helicobacter pylori using ELISA in a group of 91 children. Positive results were found in 20 children, i.e. 22%. ⋯ All 20 children with antibodies to Helicobacter pylori had histological evidence of chronic gastritis in the gastric antrum and infection with Helicobacter pylori was found in 16 cases. Detection of Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies is useful in the selection of patients for endoscopic examination of the stomach and duodenum. Endoscopy is relevant also where antibodies to Helicobacter pylori are negative and the characteristic picture of chronic disease of the upper gastrointestinal tract is present.

[Palpation and sonographic evaluation of the size of the thyroid gland].
The author compared in 88 13-year-old children evaluation of the size of the thyroid gland by palpation and sonography. Evaluation by the two methods was in agreement in 64 cases (73%) and controversial in 24 cases (27%). Palpation led in 24 instances to overestimation of the size and in 7 children (8%) to underestimation, as compared with sonography. Sonography is an essential method for evaluation of the thyroid gland in children.

The suspicion of phimosis is more frequent than it's real occurrence. The diagnosis of phimosis is often used for another nonobstructive conditions of prepuce--conglutination or tight prepuce. ⋯ Physiological development can bring spontaneous improvement in these children. In boys with persisting tight prepuce operation is indicated.

[Sonographic analysis of postextubation stridor in neonates and children with low birth weight after long-term artificial ventilation].
In a group of 23 neonates with mean birth weights of 1470 g (range 1200-3980 g) who had orotracheal intubation for an average period of 12.6 days (range 5-96 days) sonagraphic frequency analysis of 86 stridors 1-3 hours after intubation was performed. According to the results of the frequency analysis more than 97.6% of the stridors are supraglottic (84 of 86 analyzed stridors). ⋯ The finding is surprising and does not confirm the widely accepted view that neonates after extubation are threatened with oedema of the larynx or stricture at this or a distal level. As elective postextubation laryngoscopy is controversial, acoustic frequency analysis of stridor after extubation is a suitable alternate method in investigations of the clinical condition of the infant and serves the clinician as an indication on the level of stenosis of the airways.
