Investigation of an outbreak of Serratia marcescens in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Serratia marcescens is a well-known but relatively uncommon cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients. We investigated an outbreak of S marcescens in the NICU at the Farabi Hospital of Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon, Turkey. ⋯ Present investigation suggested that an outbreak of S marcescens infection was caused by a major clone in our NICU, possibly transmitted through the hands of HCWs, emphasizing that strict hand washing before and after contact with patients must be the rule of the thumb.

Clinical outcome of Mycobacterium abscessus infection and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Mycobacterium abscessus is the most resistant and rapidly growing mycobacterium and causes a wide range of clinical infectious diseases. The relationship between antimicrobial susceptibility and clinical outcome needs to be further evaluated. ⋯ M. abscessus is naturally susceptible to clarithromycin and amikacin, variably susceptible to cefoxitin and imipenem, and resistant to most other antimicrobial drugs. Combination therapy with clarithromycin, amikacin and other active antimicrobial agents may lead to clinical improvement; however, the rate of treatment failure is still high.

Review Case ReportsPlesiomonas shigelloides sepsis and meningoencephalitis in a surviving neonate.
In this study, we report the case of a 2.5-day-old neonate with septicemia and meningitis due to Plesiomonas shigelloides. Culture of the cerebrospinal fluid showed Gram-negative rods, although the glucose, protein and leukocyte counts were normal. The patient was treated with meropenem and survived without any sequelae, although we were not able to identify the source of the infection. In addition, ten previously reported cases of this infection are reviewed.

Clinical features and outcomes of spinal tuberculosis in southern Taiwan.
The early diagnosis and appropriate management of spinal tuberculosis (TB) is challenging for clinicians. This study aimed to characterize the clinical features and factors affecting treatment outcomes. ⋯ For elderly patients with chronic back pain in Taiwan, the differential diagnosis of spinal TB should be considered. Image studies and computed tomography-guided aspiration are helpful for early detection. Combined surgical intervention tended to have a more favorable outcome and longer treatment periods had no additional benefit.

Aerosolized colistin for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia: experience in a tertiary care hospital in northern Taiwan.
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii in critically ill patients presents an emerging challenge to clinicians. Administration of aerosolized colistin as an adjunctive therapy is one therapeutic option mentioned in limited evidence-based studies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adjunctive aerosolized colistin treatment for VAP due to MDR pathogens. ⋯ Aerosolized colistin may be considered as an adjunct to intravenous treatments in patients with VAP due to colistin-susceptible MDR A. baumannii in critically ill patients.
