Influence of third-generation cephalosporin resistance on adult in-hospital mortality from post-neurosurgical bacterial meningitis.
To investigate the clinical features, etiology and predictors of in-hospital mortality in adults with post-neurosurgical bacterial meningitis. ⋯ These findings may portend the spread of serious resistance to third-generation cephalosporins in nosocomial Gram-negative bacilli throughout the neurosurgical units, suggestive of the need to reassess the empirical use of third-generation cephalosporins in post-neurosurgical bacterial meningitis.

Semi-quantitative procalcitonin test for the diagnosis of bacterial infection: clinical use and experience in Japan.
The efficacy of the rapid semi-quantitative procalcitonin (PCT) test for the diagnosis of bacterial infection was evaluated in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome. ⋯ The semi-quantitative PCT test is as useful for distinguishing bacterial infection from other inflammatory diseases in common clinical practice as the quantitative PCT.

Prognostic factors of tuberculous meningitis in adults: a 6-year retrospective study at a tertiary hospital in northern Taiwan.
To investigate the clinical features, laboratory test results, imaging data, and prognostic predictors of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) in adults. ⋯ Old age, advanced stage of TBM at admission, hydrocephalus, and positive TB culture or polymerase chain reaction of CSF are factors associated with a poor prognosis for TBM. Early diagnosis and treatment, including short term steroid use, are mandatory for clinical care of adult patients with TBM.

Clinical course and outcome of children with status asthmaticus treated in a pediatric intensive care unit: a 15-year review.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical course and outcomes of children with status asthmaticus treated in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Taiwan. ⋯ The prognosis for childhood status asthmaticus is favorable. The most common trigger factors were respiratory tract infection and poor asthma control.

Clinical characteristics of pyomyositis in children: 20-year experience in a medical center in Taiwan.
Pyomyositis is an acute pyogenic infection of skeletal muscle. Because of its rarity, pyomyositis can be a diagnostic challenge. The clinical characteristics of pyomyositis were delineated in this study. ⋯ Suspicion of pyomyositis is needed for children with previous trauma or injection when they have fever and local swelling of the muscles. Although S. aureus is the most common pathogen of childhood pyomyositis, Gram-negative organisms should be considered as possible pathogens in patients with underlying diseases.
