Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Hemodilution therapy with hydroxyethyl starch solution (130/0.4) in unilateral idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss: a dose-finding, double-blind, placebo-controlled, international multicenter trial with 210 patients.
Obtain and analyze first data on hydroxyethyl starch (HES 130/0.4) as monotherapy in acute idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). ⋯ All treatment groups were equivalent, including adverse treatment events. The secondary analysis showed that ISSNHL patients at risk for not improving under placebo (i.e., patients who started treatment more than 48 h after ISSNHL onset and/or with elevated RRsyst) recovered markedly better under infusions of HES 130/0.4.

The purpose of this study was to describe the relation between the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and balance performance measures. ⋯ Functional balance tests involving locomotion correlate better with DHI scores when compared with static balance measures. The DGI explains a large component of handicap in dizzy and unsteady patients, which advocates its use in these patients.

Treatment of tinnitus with gabapentin: a pilot study.
To evaluate the effectiveness of gabapentin (Neurontin) improve the disease-specific quality of life in patients with moderate tinnitus. ⋯ There is insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of gabapentin in the treatment of tinnitus.

Sigmoid sinus diverticulum: a new surgical approach to the correction of pulsatile tinnitus.
Tinnitus represents a bothersome symptom not infrequently encountered in an otology practice. Tinnitus can be the harbinger of identifiable middle or inner ear abnormality; but more frequently, tinnitus stands alone as a subjective symptom with no easy treatment. When a patient complains of tinnitus that is pulsatile in nature, a thorough workup is indicated to rule out vascular abnormality. We report of a new diagnostic finding and method of surgical correction for select patients with pulsatile tinnitus. ⋯ Surgical reconstruction can provide lasting symptom relief for patients with pulsatile tinnitus and computed tomographic evidence of a sigmoid sinus diverticulum.

To determine the prevalence of a dehiscent geniculate ganglion on routine temporal bone computed tomography (CT). ⋯ The presence of radiographic geniculate ganglion dehiscence is common. This finding has particular importance when the middle cranial fossa or subtemporal approach is used, as the facial nerve is more at risk especially when used to address superior canal dehiscence.
