Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialSurgical masks: operative field contamination following visor-to-visor contact.
Clashing of surgical visor masks frequently occurs when two surgeons bend over an operative field simultaneously; however, it is unknown whether this results in contamination. The purpose of the present study was to determine the potential for operative field contamination following surgical visor-mask clashes. The nature of bacterial contamination was also assessed. ⋯ Surgical visor mask clashes increase the risk of bacterial contamination of the operative field.

Complications of intercostal catheter insertion using EMST techniques for chest trauma.
The purpose of the present study was to determine the complication rates associated with intercostal catheter insertion (ICI) performed using Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST) guidelines on trauma patients admitted through The Alfred Trauma Centre. ⋯ Intercostal catheter insertion for chest trauma performed in accordance with EMST guidelines has a low complication rate. Prehospital prophylactic chest decompression for ventilated patients with chest trauma, using a lateral rather than an anterior approach, may decrease the incidence of untreated tension pneumothorax.

Developing Australia's first statewide trauma registry: what are the lessons?
Trauma registries, like disease registries, provide an important analysis tool to assess the management of patient care. Trauma registries are well established and relatively common in the USA and have been used to change legislation, promote trauma prevention and to evaluate trauma system effectiveness. In Australia, the first truly statewide trauma registry was established in Victoria in 2001 with an estimated capture of 1700 major trauma cases annually. ⋯ This taskforce recommended the establishment of a new system of care for major trauma patients in Victoria and a statewide trauma registry to monitor this new system. The development of the Victorian state trauma registry has shown that there are certain issues that must be resolved for successful implementation of any system-wide registry. This paper describes the issues faced by VSTORM in developing, implementing and maintaining a statewide trauma registry.

Comparative StudyEffect of total hip arthroplasty on recreational and sporting activity.
Common concerns of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty are whether they can continue with certain recreational and sporting activities or even commence new ones after the procedure. The present paper describes preoperative and postoperative activities, the numbers participating and the time to resume these activities. ⋯ This study has shown that patients are adopting lower impact activities to participate in after total hip arthroplasty. The total number of patients performing a sport increases postoperatively but the total amount of sport played decreases. These data will help to counsel patients.
