The study's aim was to summarize the incidence and impacts of post-liver transplant (LTx) acute kidney injury (AKI) on outcomes after LTx. ⋯ The overall estimated incidence rates of post-LTx AKI and severe AKI requiring RRT are 40.8% and 7.0%, respectively. There are significant associations of post-LTx AKI with increased mortality and graft failure after transplantation. Furthermore, the incidence of post-LTx AKI has remained stable over the ten years of the study.

The increasing application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health and medicine has attracted a great deal of research interest in recent decades. This study aims to provide a global and historical picture of research concerning AI in health and medicine. A total of 27,451 papers that were published between 1977 and 2018 (84.6% were dated 2008⁻2018) were retrieved from the Web of Science platform. ⋯ The number of cancer-related publications was the highest, followed by Heart Diseases and Stroke, Vision impairment, Alzheimer's, and Depression. Moreover, the shortage in the research of AI application to some high burden diseases suggests future directions in AI research. This study offers a first and comprehensive picture of the global efforts directed towards this increasingly important and prolific field of research and suggests the development of global and national protocols and regulations on the justification and adaptation of medical AI products.

The latest guidelines identify capnography as an instrument used to assess bag-valve-mask ventilation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In this review, we analyzed the feasibility and reliability of capnography use with face mask ventilation during CPR maneuvers in adults and children. This systematic review was completed in December 2018; data for the study were obtained from the following databases: EBSCOhost, SCOPUS, PubMed, Índice Bibliográfico Español en Ciencias de la Salud (IBECS), TESEO, and Cochrane Library Plus. ⋯ Four studies were completed in adults and 13 were completed in newborns. After the analysis of the papers, we recommended a capnographic level of C in adults and B in newborns. Despite the little evidence obtained, capnography has been demonstrated to facilitate the advanced clinical practice of mask ventilation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to be reliable in the early detection of heart rate increase in newborns, and to asses in-airway patency and lung aeration during newborn resuscitation.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of Lornoxicam and Flurbiprofen in reducing perioperative sequelae after impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Ninety-one patients who needed surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar were selected for the study. All subjects were randomly allocated to receive one of the following treatments twice a day for 5 days after surgery: placebo (n = 29), Flurbiprofen (n = 31), or Lornoxicam (n = 31). ⋯ Moreover, the treatment with Lornoxicam presented significantly lower median pain scores at 2 h (p < 0.001) and at 6 h (p = 0.016) compared to Flurbiprofen and at 2 h (p < 0.001), 6 h (p = 0.01), and at 24 h (p = 0.018) after surgery compared with placebo. Swelling and maximum mouth opening values were not significantly different between the groups at each follow-up session. This trial demonstrated that treatment with Lornoxicam showed a decrease in the incidence and severity of pain in the first postoperative phase following third molar surgery compared to Flurbiprofen and placebo.

Despite the high frequency of nerve blocks in the acute phase of herpes zoster, factors associated with intervention, such as response to epidural block, have not been analyzed as predictive factors of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). To determine the predictive factors of progression to PHN in the presence of interventions, we analyzed the medical records of 145 patients who underwent transforaminal epidural injection (TFEI) in the acute phase of herpes zoster. A total volume of 5 mL (a mixture of 0.5% lidocaine and 5 mg dexamethasone) was injected during TFEI. ⋯ Clinical data of age, sex, involved dermatome, presence of comorbidity, time from zoster onset to first TFEI, numerical rating scale (NRS) before TFEI, NRS at 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months after the first TFEI, and number of TFEI were collected and analyzed. Through multivariate logistic regression analysis, pain improvement less than 50% at 1 week after the first TFEI was a strong predictive factor of progression of PHN at all time points. Response to TFEI appears to be a stronger predictive factor of progression to PHN than patient factors of sex, age, degree of initial pain, and presence of co-morbidity.
