A supraglottic airway device (SAD) may be utilised for rescue re-oxygenation following a failed attempt at endotracheal intubation with direct or video laryngoscopy. However, the choice of subsequent method to secure a definitive airway is not clearly established. The aim of the present study was to compare two techniques for securing a definitive airway via the in-situ SAD. ⋯ Successful tracheal intubation of cadavers by EPs is achievable, without iatrogenic airway trauma, via a SAD using either a FAS or RIT, but was 35 s quicker with the FAS.

The impact of video games on training: can it change the game of endotracheal intubation?
In recent years, several studies have demonstrated that the experience derived from video games improves interventions that require technical skills. Airway management is crucial to anesthesiologists, requiring technical and non-technical skills. We evaluated the benefits of video games for video stylet-guided tracheal intubation, which allows the use of video technology in airway management of residents with anesthesiology training. ⋯ Time to intubate the trachea by using video stylet in (Group 1) was found to be 29 s on average, and it was 59.9 s for Group 2 ( p < 0.01) The average number of tracheal intubation attempts was 1.1 in Group 1, and 1.4 in Group 2 (p = 0.19). Video gaming experience improves the visual attention. Those accustomed to playing with video games, video stylet- guided tracheal intubation, performed intubation in less time.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, 60-80% of patients admitted to ICU require mechanical ventilation for respiratory distress. We aimed to compare the frequency of postextubation stridor (PES) and to explore risk factors in COVID-19 subjects compared to those without COVID-19. ⋯ PES affected nearly one-quarter of subjects with COVID-19, a proportion significantly higher than that seen in controls. Independent risk factors for PES were COVID-19, female sex, and tube mobilization or re-intubation or prone positioning. PES was associated with persistent viral shedding at the time of extubation.

During invasive ventilatory support, infants and children are inherently at risk for developing injury or complications related to the insertion and maintenance of an endotracheal tube (ETT). It is essential for respiratory therapists to understand the factors that contribute to the propensity for harm while preparing for, inserting, securing, and maintaining the position of an ETT throughout the duration of use. Implementing care bundles based on the available literature is useful in reducing iatrogenic complications as well as the risk for morbidity and mortality of pediatric patients requiring an ETT to facilitate respiratory support.
