Noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) is widely used in pediatric ICUs (PICUs). However, there is limited experience regarding the utilization of NRS in non-PICU settings. We aimed to evaluate the success rate of NRS in pediatric high-dependency units (PHDUs), identify predictors of NRS failure, quantify adverse events, and assess outcomes. ⋯ In our cohort, we found NRS in PHDU safe and effective; however, maximum FIO2 > 0.5 post treatment and PEEP > 7 cm H2O were associated with NRS failure.

Experiences of isolation in patients in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients in the intensive care unit have been subjected to strict isolation precautions, and potentially long and complicated patient courses. The aim of the study is to provide an investigation of the experiences of isolation in COVID-19-positive patients in the ICU during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark. ⋯ This study provided further insights into the liminal patient experiences of being isolated in the ICU due to COVID-19. Robust themes of experience were achieved through an in-depth phenomenological approach. Although, similarities in experiences compared to other patient groups exist, the precarious situation constituted by COVID-19 lead to significant intensifications across multiple parameters.

Trends in Cardiovascular Surgery in South Korea: A Nationwide Cohort Study from 2010 to 2019.
We aimed to investigate mortality and its associated factors in cardiovascular surgery-associated intensive care unit (ICU) admissions in South Korea from 2010 to 2019. ⋯ Cardiovascular surgery-associated intensive care admissions gradually increased from 2010 to 2019 in South Korea. Among these patients, the highest 1-year mortality rate was observed in the aortic procedures group, followed by the CABG + valve, others, CABG-only, and valve-only groups.

Anesthesiology 1977; 46:138-41. ⋯ A unique opportunity for research was the spontaneous birth of a network of scientists who became friends in the European Group of Research in Intensive Care Medicine. In this environment, it was possible to develop core concepts such as the "baby lung" and to understand the mechanisms underlying computed tomography-density redistribution in the prone position. Physiology guided us in the 1970s, and understanding mechanisms remains of paramount importance today.

Randomized Controlled TrialBilateral Ultrasound-Guided Mid-Point Transverse Process to Pleura Block for Perioperative Analgesia in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Study.
Mid-point transverse process to pleura (MTP) block is a new regional analgesia technique. This study aimed to assess the perioperative analgesic effects of MTP block in children undergoing open-heart surgery. ⋯ Single-shot bilateral ultrasound-guided MTP block in children undergoing cardiac surgery reduced the mean fentanyl consumption in the first postoperative 24 hours, intraoperative fentanyl requirements, pain score at rest, time to extubation, and duration of ICU stay.
