Background: Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is reported to be related to the outcome of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, little is known about their associations with prognosis in newborn patients in neonatal ICU (NICU). The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic significance of the PLR for newborn patients in the NICU. ⋯ Lower PLR was associated with higher hospital mortality (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.75−0.95, p = 0.005) and 90-day mortality (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.76−0.96, p = 0.010). The prognostic predictive ability of models combining PLR with other variables for hospital mortality was good (AUC for Model 1 = 0.804, 95% CI = 0.73−0.88, p < 0.0001; AUC for Model 2 = 0.964, 95% CI = 0.95−0.98, p < 0.0001). Conclusion: PLR is a novel independent risk factor for newborn patients in the NICU.

Background and Objectives: An elevated procalcitonin level has classically been linked to bacterial infections. Data on the association between elevated procalcitonin and the outcome of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are conflicting. Some linked it to associated bacterial co-infections, while others correlated the elevation with disease severity without coexisting bacterial infections. ⋯ An elevated procalcitonin level was the strongest predictor of in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: Measurement of procalcitonin can have a prognostic role among COVID-19 patients. The admission procalcitonin level can identify patients at risk of ICU admission, progression to IMV, and in-hospital mortality.

Platelet transfusions and thrombocytopenia in intensive care units: Protocol for an international inception cohort study (PLOT-ICU).
Thrombocytopenia is frequent in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and has been associated with worse outcome. Platelet transfusions are often used in the management of ICU patients with severe thrombocytopenia. However, the reported frequencies of thrombocytopenia and platelet transfusion practices in the ICU vary considerably. Therefore, we aim to provide contemporary epidemiological data on thrombocytopenia and platelet transfusion practices in the ICU. ⋯ The outlined international PLOT-ICU cohort study will provide contemporary epidemiological data on the burden and clinical significance of thrombocytopenia in adult ICU patients and describe the current platelet transfusion practice.

Impact of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery patients on variation in severity-adjusted resource use in intensive care units.
The resource use of cardiac surgery and neurosurgery patients likely differ from other ICU patients. We evaluated the relevance of these patient groups on overall ICU resource use. ⋯ Cardiac and neurosurgery have major effects on the cost structure of multidisciplinary ICUs. Extending SRUR analysis to patient subpopulations facilitates comparison of resource use between ICUs and may help to optimize resource allocation.

Colchicine Poisoning Cases in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Twenty-Year Study.
Colchicine intoxication is rare but potentially fatal. The toxic dose of colchicine is not well established; it has been reported that major toxicity starts after doses of 0.5 mg/kg. We aimed to evaluate the demographic, clinical aspects, treatments, and outcome of colchicine toxicity cases in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). ⋯ Colchicine poisoning has a high risk of mortality, and death can be seen in doses less than a single acute dose of 0.5 mg/kg. These patients need close monitoring because there is always a risk of them to require aggressive support. Prognosis is poor in patients who have rapidly developing hemodynamic failure.
