Introduction: Violence in the intensive care unit (ICU) is poorly characterised and its incidence is largely extrapolated from studies in the emergency department. Policy requirements vary between jurisdictions and have not been formally evaluated. Methods: A multisite, single-time point observational study was conducted across Australasian ICUs which focused on the incidence of violence in the previous 24 hours, the characteristics of patients displaying violent behaviour, the perceived contributors, and the management strategies implemented. ⋯ Of the 44 participating ICUs, 30 (68%) had a documented violence procedure. Conclusion: Violence in the ICU was common and frequently required intervention. In this study, one-third of ICUs did not have formal violence procedures, and in those with violence procedures, considerable variation was observed.

COVID-19 vaccines have been crucial in the pandemic response and understanding changes in vaccines effectiveness is essential to guide vaccine policies. Although the Delta variant is no longer dominant, understanding vaccine effectiveness properties will provide essential knowledge to comprehend the development of the pandemic and estimate potential changes over time. ⋯ Even though the vaccine effectiveness against infection waned over time, all vaccine regimens remained effective against hospitalisation after the second vaccine dose. For all vaccine regimens, a booster facilitated recovery of effectiveness. The results from this support the use of heterologous schedules, increasing flexibility in vaccination policy.

Multicenter StudyEye Tracking communication with intubated critically ill patients: a proof-of-concept multicenter pilot study.
Communication is essential to establish patient-caregivers relationship in the intensive care unit. Intubated patients are not able to speak because the tracheal tube prevents vocalization. Use of communication tools such as eye tracking device could improve communication with intubated patients. The objective of this feasibility pilot study was to demonstrate that an eye tracking device specifically developed for the intensive care could be used easily by awake intubated patient with a very short training time. ⋯ This study shows that the use of an eye tracking technology device specifically designed for the intensive care setting, with a short training is easy to use for intubated patient. Patients, relatives and caregivers showed high satisfaction.

ReviewOutcomes in patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission after emergency laparotomy - a retrospective study.
Outcomes after emergency laparotomy (EL) are poor. These patients are often admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). This study explored outcomes in patients who were admitted to an ICU within 48 h after EL. ⋯ Age, high APACHE II-score, low CRP and platelet count, and admission from the PACU to the ICU associated with mortality after EL in patients admitted to an ICU within 48 h after EL.

There is limited number of data showing possible correlation between ABO blood types and prognosis and mortality of COVID-19 patients. It was aimed to investigate whether ABO blood group type affects the prognosis and mortality rates in patients with severe COVID-19 hospitalized in the ICU (intensive care unit) of a tertiary-level hospital in Turkey. ⋯ ABO blood types carry different association risk factors for the prognosis of severe COVID-19 patients hospitalized in ICU. Specifically, blood group O was correlated with an increased risk of deterioration of respiratory status including intubation and elevation of laboratory findings whereas it did not affect the risk of increased mortality.
