Curosurf surfactant application on preterm babies with respiratory complications-health-economic benefits.
The implementation of surfactant for respiratory syndrome approbates the therapy as a revolutionary method in intensive neonatal therapy and respiratory resuscitation. It is important to investigate the costs of this treatment. ⋯ The models of evaluation of cost effectiveness reveal that the medicinal product is expensive but effective from the aspect of short-term therapeutic results.

The use of antenatal corticosteroids in preterm labour for the prevention of perinatal mortality in hospitals in Tanzania.
Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) are given to pregnant women at risk of preterm delivery to hasten the maturation of the lungs, lowering the risk of newborn respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and perinatal mortality. ⋯ ACS significantly reduced the risk of perinatal mortality and RDS among preterm infants exposed to ACS in utero and delivered by women in preterm labour. The use of ACS should be encouraged in low-resource settings where preterm birth is prevalent to improve perinatal outcomes.

Background and Objectives: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm infants commonly occurs due to the immaturity-related deficiency of pulmonary surfactant. Beyond prematurity, various environmental and genetic factors can influence the onset and progression of RDS. This study aimed to analyze three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the ABCA3 gene to assess the ABCA3 gene as a candidate gene for susceptibility to RDS and overall survival in newborns and to evaluate the utility of MLPA in RDS neonatal patients. ⋯ The minor C allele frequency of the ABCA3 rs323043 (c.1755G>C) SNP showed a significant increase in preterm infants with RDS. MLPA results indicated that the predominant findings were normal, revealing no CNVs in the genes ABCA3 and SFTPC that were investigated in our patients. Conclusions: The presence of the variant C allele in the rs323043 (c.1755G>C) SNP may be a risk factor for RDS in premature newborns.

Ongoing research aims to improve our understanding of ARDS, including its molecular mechanisms, individualized treatment options, and potential interventions to reduce inflammation and promote lung repair. ⋯ Different metabolic phenotypes characterize ARDS associated with different viral and bacterial infections.
