Trends in California Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: Sex-Race/Ethnicity Disparity and Income Inequality.
To examine the cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related death trends and the relationship between CVD deaths and sex, race/ethnicity, and income in California from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2021. ⋯ All the death rates that were decreasing, stagnant, or increasing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic increased after the pandemic. We found increasingly adverse outcomes among the poor and racial/ethnic minority populations.

Epidemiology of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure in Australian and New Zealand intensive care units during 2005-2022. A binational, registry-based study.
Acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure (AHRF) is a common reason for intensive care unit (ICU) admission. However, patient characteristics, outcomes, and trends over time are unclear. We describe the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with AHRF over time. ⋯ The healthcare burden due to AHRF may be larger than expected, and mortality rates remain high in severe AHRF. Although mortality has decreased over time, this may reflect improvements in ICU care in general, rather than specifically in AHRF. More research is required to earlier identify AHRF and stratify these patients at risk of deterioration early, and to validate our findings.

CORRECTION OF TRAUMA-INDUCED COAGULOPATHY BY GOAL DIRECTED THERAPY: A SECONDARY ANALYSIS OF THE ITACTIC TRIAL.
Trauma hemorrhage induces a coagulopathy with a high associated mortality rate. The Implementing Treatment Algorithms for the Correction of Trauma Induced Coagulopathy (ITACTIC) randomized trial tested two goal-directed treatment algorithms for coagulation management: one guided by conventional coagulation tests and one by viscoelastic hemostatic assays (viscoelastic). The lack of a difference in 28-day mortality led the authors to hypothesize that coagulopathic patients received insufficient treatment to correct coagulopathy. ⋯ In ITACTIC, many bleeding trauma patients did not receive an indicated goal-directed treatment. Interventions arrived late during resuscitation and were only partially effective at correcting coagulopathy.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyFrailty and health-related life quality in long-term follow up of intensive care patients above 65 years old: Protocol for a Norwegian prospective, observational multicenter study.
Frailty is strongly correlated with mortality in intensive care unit patients, yet routine screening among intensive care patients is rarely performed. The aim of this study is to assess frailty and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients before intensive care admission and to compare this with outcomes after 3 and 12-months. The Clinical Frailty Scale and EQ-5D-5L will be used to assess frailty and HRQoL, respectively. ⋯ The study is registered in ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06012942. Protocol version 2.7.1, 19.05.2023.
