Extraction of pins from the airway with flexible bronchoscopy.
Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration is a worldwide health problem which often results in life threatening complications. Standard flexible bronchoscopy (FB) is used increasingly in the treatment of tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration in adults and older children, especially in the removal of aspirated foreign bodies which have entered into the peripheral bronchi. ⋯ Our study suggests that FB is a safe, easy and successful method used in the removal of foreign bodies, such as pins, from the tracheobronchial trees. By employing FB, indications of thoracotomy and other invasive methods can be reduced especially in the cases of pins localized in distal airways and in the evaluation of suspected foreign bodies.

Efficacy of nebulized flunisolide combined with salbutamol and ipratropium bromide in stable patients with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The efficacy of nebulized corticosteroids in the prevention of exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been poorly studied. ⋯ Nebulized flunisolide is a good alternative to other inhaled corticosteroids when added to nebulized salbutamol/ipratropium bromide in the long-term treatment of moderate-to-severe COPD patients.

The effect of tiotropium on hyperinflation and exercise capacity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation, which results in the progressive development of dyspnea and exercise limitation. ⋯ Tiotropium 18 mug once daily reduced hyperinflation with consequent improvements in walking distance and HRQoL in patients with COPD and lung hyperinflation.

Gender and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in high-risk smokers.
Data suggest that women are more susceptible to develop airway obstruction compared to men for the same number of cigarettes smoked. ⋯ Using the GOLD criteria, the prevalence of COPD in smokers was higher than previous reports. In this self-selected sample of high-risk smokers having the same smoking history, prevalence was lower in women than in men, suggesting a lower susceptibility for the development of airway obstruction.

Use of studded Polyflex stents in patients with neoplastic obstructions of the central airways.
The Polyflex is a commercially available silastic airway stent with proven efficacy. Due to a smooth outer surface its anchorage in the airway wall is superficial which may lead to stent migration. ⋯ The studded Polyflex showed excellent efficacy, was very well tolerated, and had a very low migration rate. It presents an improvement over the older smooth model and can be considered a true alternative to the most widely used silastic stent, the Dumon stent.
