Clusters of COVID-19 in long-term care hospitals and facilities in Japan from 16 January to 9 May 2020.
To clarify the association of cluster number and size of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in long-term care (LTC) hospitals/facilities, general medical/welfare facilities and non-medical/welfare facilities with morbidity and mortality in 47 prefectures during 16 January to 9 May 2020 in Japan. ⋯ Preventive efforts against COVID-19 outbreaks even at the early phase of the epidemic are critically important in LTC hospitals/facilities, as both the larger number and size of clusters only in LTC hospitals/facilities were independently linked to higher mortality in prefectures in Japan. Reliability and construct validity of a novel motor-cognitive dual-task test: A Stepping Trail Making Test.
This study aimed to examine the reliability and construct validity of the Stepping Trail Making Test (S-TMT) in community-dwelling older adults. ⋯ These results suggest that the S-TMT is a reliable dual-task test comprising mobility for motor function and a visual-dependent execution function for cognitive function in older women. ReviewAssociation between sarcopenia and pneumonia in older people.
Pneumonia is a major cause of death in older people, and the number of such deaths is increasing. Present guidelines for pneumonia management are based on a pathogen-oriented strategy that relies on the optimal application of antibiotics. Older pneumonia inpatients show the high incidence of aspiration pneumonia. ⋯ Associations between respiratory muscle strength and pneumonia are currently under investigation. Evaluation and management of sarcopenia could potentially become a new strategy to prevent and treat pneumonia in older patients, and research has only recently been launched. End-of-life care of nursing home residents: A survey among general practitioners in northwestern Germany.
To describe general practitioners' (GPs) perspectives on end-of-life care of nursing home residents. ⋯ This study showed that GPs tend to be critical regarding end-of-life care in nursing homes. To improve end-of-life care, better training in palliative care for nursing staff and GPs might be warranted. In addition, advance care planning can help to ensure that residents' wishes are respected. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2020; 20: 25-30.
