Low-mannose-binding lectin levels in susceptibility to neonatal sepsis in preterm neonates with fetal inflammatory response syndrome.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate cord blood mannose binding levels (MBL), to evaluate possible relationship between cord blood MBL levels with neonatal sepsis and culture confirmed neonatal sepsis in preterm newborn with gestational age below 34 weeks with fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS). ⋯ Here in, we report firstly lower MBL levels were found related with sepsis in neonates, especially in newborns with culture proven sepsis. Low MBL levels may help to identify neonates with FIRS at high risk of developing sepsis.

Case ReportsPersistence of ventilatory defect after resolution of pulmonary interstitial emphysema in a preterm baby.
Pulmonary interstitial emphysema is a common complication of mechanical ventilation in preterm babies. We report a case of severe unilateral pulmonary interstitial emphysema in a premature newborn, treated with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, lateral decubitus positioning and selective intubation. After complete radiological resolution of the pulmonary emphysema in the left lung, the patient was studied by electrical impedance tomography and a marked reduction of ventilation was identified in the left lung despite radiological resolution of the cysts. This finding indicates that functional abnormalities may persist for longer periods after radiologic resolution of such lesions.

Ultrasound machines are nowadays part of the armamentarium of all modern Labor and Delivery Suites. Due to their portability, these machines are ideal for use in emergencies which can occur at any of the labor and delivery rooms. Many of the emergencies in Labor and Delivery can be life threatening; thus, maternal and fetal safety requires efficient and timely ultrasound evaluation. The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines for quick and efficient use of ultrasound based on both the authors' experience and the published literature.

Clinical TrialPercutaneously inserted central catheters in the newborns: a center's experience in Turkey.
To evaluate the success rate of insertion of percutaneously inserted central catheters (PICCs) and their duration; and the short- and long-term complications in the neonatal period. ⋯ Our initial experience with PICCs is that their use provides life-saving therapy, they are easily inserted and they are convenient. Mechanical complications were the common reason for removal and we did not see complications more serious.
