To describe personal music player (PMP) usage among adolescents, sociodemographic determinants and association with audiometric notches. ⋯ PMP exposure above the occupational limits of 80 and 85 dB(A) set by the Directive 2003/10/EC may be a risk factor for developing noise-induced hearing loss. Educational measures to ameliorate high risk behaviors in PMP usage are needed, particularly for socially disadvantaged groups.

Hearing protector fit testing with off-shore oil-rig inspectors in Louisiana and Texas.
This field study aimed to assess the noise reduction of hearing protection for individual workers, demonstrate the effectiveness of training on the level of protection achieved, and measure the time required to implement hearing protector fit testing in the workplace. ⋯ Fit testing of the workers' earplugs identified those workers who were and were not achieving the desired level of protection. Recommendations for other hearing protection solutions were made for workers who could not achieve the target PAR. The study demonstrates the need for individual hearing protector fit testing and addresses some of the barriers to implementation.

To assess patients' judgements of the effectiveness of the tinnitus and hyperacusis therapies offered in a specialist UK National Health Service audiology department. ⋯ The most effective components of the tinnitus and hyperacusis therapy interventions were judged by the patients to be counselling, education, and CBT.

The transtheoretical model (TTM) of behaviour change focuses on clients' readiness for adopting new health behaviours. This study explores how clients' readiness for change can be identified through their interactions with audiologists during history-taking in initial appointments; and whether clients' readiness has consequences for the rehabilitation decisions they make within the initial appointment. ⋯ The transtheoretical model of behaviour change can be useful for helping audiologists individualize management planning to be congruent with individual clients' needs, attitudes, desires, and psychological readiness for action in order to optimize clients' hearing outcomes.

Test D-methionine (D-met) as an otoprotectant from kanamycin-induced ototoxicity and determine the lowest maximally protective D-met dose. ⋯ D-met significantly reduced ABR threshold shifts and increased OHC percentages compared to kanamycin-treated controls. Results may be clinically significant particularly for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients who frequently suffer from kanamycin-induced hearing loss in developing countries.
